What's the difference between piano and keyboard lessons?

I'm gonna start taking piano lessons at the local music school in the very near future. But one thing I noticed is that piano lessons and keyboard lessons are two different things you can sign in for, but what the hell is the difference really? Isn't a keyboard just an electric piano with more effects and stuff? I don't get why it's seperate courses.

I'm gonna play piano, so it's not because I'm particularly interested in keyboards, I was just wondering what the hell the difference between the lessons could be...But perhaps this is the only music school where it's obviously two different things :laugh2:

On keyboards you don't have the cool weighted keys. Typical for keyboards is the automatic solo accompaniment. You play a c,e,g in the left hand and you have the bass, drums, a whole band which plays something the programmer did.
That's my view on it. That's a "entertainer" thing.

I'd say take piano lessons where the left hand is equally utilised. If you're in a band you don't need the automatic band, you have just focus on the voicings/melody. Of course, if you don't have a band it's harder to play something which sounds good AND flows.

But piano lessons are where its at. If you can play the piano you won't have troubles to play a keyboard, it is difficult the other way round imo.

A synthesizer or Rhodes have also no "digital band".

Keyboard for me is this stuff:

synthesizer (more effect stuff..it's like a plug in for cubase or so :D )

I started with keyboard x years ago..played pop tunes with the keyboard-band but I ended up with a piano.

I got this stage piano at home:

It has weighted keys and 5 or 6 more sounds but I only use the piano ones.

I hope I could help, I got tons of notes, mostly jazz tunes so I could scan stuff in and mail it to you. Piano is a great instrument..I played once "Sultans of Swing" on keyboard once, had a guitar sound and sweat my ass off but some people said "the machine is doing it"..of course I did it!!!

I mainly use the pads/synth stuff on my keys but I use piano playing syle on it. No entertainer stuff again!

But I don't know how they interpret it :D Check the things out which you like...I like "normal" piano best.

Well, don't worry, it's been my plan to play piano all along, I was just curious what the difference was. If you'd like to, you're welcome to scan notes, but only if you feel like it. I can't demand it from you. ;)
