whats the difference? (floyd rose)

Re: whats the difference? (floyd rose)

On the regular, the string lock bolts go through the whale tail. On the lo-pro the string lock bolts stop short of the whale tail and the trem ends up shorter and lower than the old style.

Re: whats the difference? (floyd rose)

Quality of metal used.

Most every licensed version of the Floyd Rose uses cast metal in the saddles and base plate. This soft metal knife edges will wear quickly cause tuning and intonation problems. The saddles will crack at some point, and the bar will forever be loose.

The Original Floyd, or even it's Korean produced OEM version are far better choices using a hardened steel plate and saddles.

The "Lo Pro" version just uses a different style saddle (eg: Gotoh or Ibanez)

Hard to tell from those pics, but after reading the old thread, did you ever do anything with the guitar?

Re: whats the difference? (floyd rose)

Well that is what I meant, so you did get it refretted and set up.

How is it?

Re: whats the difference? (floyd rose)

It sounds pretty good, I still want a real, not ply body for that neck, in a tele shape with slanted bucker and single coil in the bridge, I am thinking maple. I freaking forgot to ask the tech to take a look what pup that was, to my ears that is a JB, i dont know why it is installed backwards though ... my question is basically should I keep this bridge for the new body whenever it come along or should spend a little more and hear a big difference ....

Re: whats the difference? (floyd rose)

It's the single locking version the FRII. They area where the locks screws should be is squared instead of round, meaning string through saddles. I would look into getting another bridge.

Re: whats the difference? (floyd rose)

soo, what exactly is the dif between an original floyd rose and a gotoh floyd rose?

does the gotoh drop right in place with the original? And are they as durable?

There are little differences here in there in the design. Most notably the saddles and the arm housing. Function and feel are about the same use wise. The Gotoh has a little smoother to the touch. The angles on the saddles are rounded a bit more, as opposed to the blocky look and feel of the OFR.

The Gotoh baseplate is just a tad longer than an OFR. In most instances, you can drop a Gotoh into a recessed OFR route without any problems. Sometimes you might have to do a little sanding for smooth operation. For a top mount route, you should be able to interchange them freely without any troubles.

Re: whats the difference? (floyd rose)

I'm gonna retro the Gotoh onto my current Strat... non-floating, down-only. The cool thing about the Gotoh design (well, one of many cool things), is that only one of the posts has to be exact. The one on the bass-side can be a little off, which is great for an amateur like myself. I like the beveled saddles too, since I do a lot of palm muted stuff. The screw-in arm design and the locking pivot posts are a great idea as well. The only thing I'm not looking forward to, is routing the hole bigger, but I'll manage...
