The history behind it...

Was it made for any specific player or any specific purpose?
I know James Hetfield used one on that first Metallica album
so it's been around for a while :)

(allegedly) Originally called the Darth Vader until a cease and desist letter came from Lucas. Very first proto(s) had giant squared off allen head poles. I think one is in our display case.

I think Hetfield used it on Puppets but I don't know if it's older than that.

What about the GFS Crusader?

I wonder if we talking to the pickup poles it will sound exactly like Darth Vader in his mask.
(insert Darth's signature music here) "I am your father..hooohhh"
:D

Re: What's the story on the Invader?

No, that's a pickup that is no longer available. I'm really curious if SD gave GFS a cease and desist.

I doubt it. Dean is making what they call The Tyrant, which was made for the dude from Arch Enemy. They're putting it into more guitars like budget superstrats and hot rodded V's and stuff.

I very seriously doubt it. What would they base it on? The name isnt anywhere near close enough. What that it has big cap screw poles? Then why arent other companies suing each other over using slugs and slot screws? Odds are much higher that for whatever reason it wasnt a good seller so they nuked it.

It probably just sounded bad...

It's not easy to pack that much DESTRUCTION into a passive pickup and not have it sound, well...bad.
Even the Inva........Darth Vader is picky about pot value and wood type.

The higher output GFS pickups sound great, as do the higher output Duncan Designeds.

The Invader is picky, but I think it's more the design than anything, not the output.

Re: What's the story on the Invader?

I wonder why the invader needs those huge polepieces. why won't the usual polepieces work, of the polepieces the superdistortion has? how would those affect the tone?
