Whats the Tighter Dimarzio Pickup?!?!

WITH FULL DISTORTION

F. Hails Railsologist
Hails Guys!
i got a Dimarzio - X2N from a friend
i installed on my ibanez (22 frets, 25'5 scale length) and i put 0.12 strings
i´m not sure if the lack of tightness on the bass frequencies,(kinda overall too) are because of the 0.12 strings tuned to B, or because of the pickup that´s not tight enough for my tastes. i´ll buy a 0.13 set and see .

what do you guys think should be the problem?

Well, i want to ask, besides of the Evo 2 and evolution(did any of you played both and can tell me the subtle differences between one and the other one?) which dimarzio Metal (or non metal) Pickups are the Tightes on the bass frequencies ?!!?

i cant think of a The breed, Drop Sonic, Super distortion(?), Tone zone(?), Paf Pro?!!?!
Hails Jp

ah, it´s a mahogany body /maple neck guitar.
and tuned to B standard.

THANK´S IN ADVANCE.

Re: Whats the Tighter Dimarzio Pickup?!?!

Of the 4 you mentioned it's definitely the D-Sonic. It's tight like an Evo....but just darker sounding...very cool pickup IMO.

Re: Whats the Tighter Dimarzio Pickup?!?!

Thank´s Man
i was thinking a paf pro COMBO on this guitar too
will it be a good match for drop B tuning and the mahogany body!?

Re: Whats the Tighter Dimarzio Pickup?!?!

From Dimarzio you won't find anything more tight and clear than an Evo. it certainly handles b tuning very well, i've tried it. No idea about the d-sonic but the super d and tonezone aren't nearly tight enough for that kind of use imo.
The PAF Pro might be a good idea but i'm a bit sceptical about the idea of using a PAF style pup in b. i somehow have the feeling that might actually sound somehow weird and might lack the thumb and power you'd expect.

I agree with your recommendations for the Evo. Punchy, tight, clear and great for drop tunings. I have the Evo in the bridge of a Epi Les Paul Std with a PAF Pro in the neck. The PAF Pro matches the Evo well in the neck but I would not consider it for a bridge pickup for what he's looking for. No experience with the d-sonic although it might work too.

i´ll think about it.
Well, i mentioned the Paf pro combo, because, I´VE heard in a interview that Trey Azagthoth used to use at least one or a combo of those Paf pros.
so, although his tone isn´t that great and i´m not looking to have a similar sound(i like more of the tone from Decapitated-nihility, Despised Icon-your own poison , Vader-reign forever world/Revelations,carcass - heartwork, cephalic carnage-lucid interval) , but it may be a good idea to try it. maybe I´ll discover a NEW sound !?! Q:)
at least all those albuns i wrote in ( ) ´s are done with EMGs , 81 bridge.
if i don´t find something, i´ll go with an evo 2 and a Paf pro.
anyone have any experience with a Paf Joe in the neck?
I guess a Air Norton will be too bassy in the neck, due to the MAHOGANY wood. No!?

Re: Whats the Tighter Dimarzio Pickup?!?!

I'm using an Air Zone in C right now, and I like it a lot, but I'm using a tone that's closer to Helmet than death metal.

That said, since I got the Air Zone, I haven't been thinking about it a lot, regardless of the tone I'm using. Typically, I'm obsessing over which pickup it is, but I think I might be pretty happy with this one.

Re: Whats the Tighter Dimarzio Pickup?!?!

I'm digging my multibucker, 2 pickups in one, both humbucking, you can pick any dual blade model that suits ya ... I've been thinking of mixing a tone zone S with a fast track 2 for a mondo rock sound

Heartwork was done with some stock Iabnez guitars with stock pickups, no EMGs to be found on that album(they used rather strange combinations of gear for that album, so i don't know how much the pups really mattered).
From Dimarzios EQ chart i guess the Air Norton would be too dark in mahogany(usually the DMZ charts and descriptions are spot-on so i would go by them).
Maybe the Evo 2 could also be too dark sounding since it's basicly a beefed up version of the regular evo and the regular one isn't the brightest of pups already.

I wouldn't go with a PAF Pro, man. I've heard from too many people how muddy it is in the neck spot. Why not go with the Evolution neck? If you wanted something beside the Evolution neck, try the FRED in the neck. It's a tad hotter than the Evolution neck, and it's pretty bright in the bridge. May end up working quite well in the neck. It's very harmonically rich, also, even as a neck pickup. Crazy harmonics. Pretty tight pickup as well, if I'm not mistaken. Would probably be worth a try. Good luck! :)

I have noe experience with the FRED, but the Evo neck definitely is tight as hell(for a neck pup) and has the same insane harmonics the bridge version has.

Re: Whats the Tighter Dimarzio Pickup?!?!

I have a Tone Zone and a FRED/PAF Pro combo.

Stay away from the Tone Zone. If you're guitar was atleast basswood, I'd say go for it. But anything besides basswood or maple for a body, I say no,. My ESP has a maple neck, ebony fretboard and an Alder body and the TZ is just on the brink of being too muddy.

FRED - great for hard rock, lead work and alternative. Not very good for metal/drop tunings IMO.

PAF Pro- killer neck pickup, couldn't be any happier. Thick, semi-hot, harmonics are rich and great split tone.

I'd go for either a Evo II, D-Sonic or Steve's Special,. Petrucci uses the D-Sonic too.

Wouldn't something with a slightly scooped tone also handle drop tunings better? The Steve's Spceial may be a good one to check out.

Re: Whats the Tighter Dimarzio Pickup?!?!

i had it in a poplar jackson before. didn´t like it
it can be a good stuff, but i preffer a mid galore ahahahaha
Q:)

Re: Whats the Tighter Dimarzio Pickup?!?!

I think you'll like the Evo. I doubt there's a tighter passive pickup in existence.

Re: Whats the Tighter Dimarzio Pickup?!?!

Yah, i want a tight pup in the bridge,m but not one in the neck.
ahahahahahahahaha
a medium tightness is enough for the neck spot. i need clarity for low tuning and lots of crunchy mids and singing highs.
smooth bass.
moderate output.
EVO2 OR EVO 1 BRIDGE? PAFO PRO NECK THEN!?

Re: Whats the Tighter Dimarzio Pickup?!?!

I wouldn't go with a PAF Pro in the neck, man. Too thick and muddy.

I've heard some people gripe about the Evo not reacting well to certain playing nuances, so they used an Evo 2 instead and liked it more. All just personal preference, really. The Evo is hotter than the Evo 2. Of course, if you don't like the Evo, you could return it for the Evo 2, or the other way around.
