What's Up with G&L?

Every G&L I've ever played seems to be at a standard equal to or above a Suhr or Tom Anderson, yet they go for half the price.

Is this some gouging on Suhr and Anderson's part, or just that G&L is super-efficient from Leo's genius building techniques?

Re: What's Up with G&L?

suhr is overprice and anderson has cut way back on production.

g&l is just one of those compnays that doesnt have good resale value. usa hamer is another great example, i think they are some of the best build, best sounding and best playing guitars around and you can pick them up for less than a gibson or fender that is half the instrument.

most g&l's that ive played are really nice but only one was so great i needed to have it before i left the store. used bang for your buck they are way better built than a fender

Re: What's Up with G&L?

As far as I can tell, the ONLY guitars with good resale are high-end Gibsons and Fenders. I had a hand made McNaught that I had to sell for less than half of retail in order to move it. But it still makes me wonder what G&L is trying to do. Compete with Fender head to head?

They seem to be really well made. I'm also wondering what those big single coils on the ASAT sound like. Are they more like P90s?

G&L makes a fantastic guitar. I can't say enough to promote them. I would take a G&L over virtually ANYTHING similar in the marketplace. The ASAT soapbar shaped pickups are very icy and crisp in the high end, AND round and fat in the midrange as well. I've got a set of two in one guitar and a set of three in another. They're great. They are not exactly like a P90 because they have one bar magnet across the bottom as opposed to two opposing magnets flanking the pole pieces. They are also all Ceramic that I've seen.

At some points they were using Duncan AII's in some Legacies, and possibly still are. They use some Duncan humbuckers too.

I've got a Commanche and I love it.

Custom ordered and built for me in 1998. Cost- around $840.

Re: What's Up with G&L?

Last summer on my amp hunt I played a G&L Tribute Strat H-S-S, ash body. I was mightily surprised how well that guitar felt and played. The neck was incredibly smooth, fret dressing was immaculate. The shock came when I looked at the price. I thought I was playing a guitar in the $900-$1000 range.......it was $499. That's a great deal for something like that.

Played my first G&L Legacy this week ... bought it. Compares pretty well in A/B test with my son's American Strat. See G&L avatar.

Re: What's Up with G&L?

I have a bad addiction to G&L guitars. :smack: In my opinion they are the best. The G&L, S-500, and Comanche are the best strat style guitars on the market.

I don't think I would buy a guitar with the intention of selling it later.

That being said, every G&L I have ever played has been a fantastic guitar.

Re: What's Up with G&L?

There is a black Strat style G&L that has been sitting at a local shop for quite some time. They're asking $395 before 6% Michigan sales tax. It has a Floyd style trem -- which I have always hated -- otherwise I would probably have hopped on it. I wonder why no-one else has grabbed it up.

I agree except when you say better built than Fender! I`m sure some are but not all. I have experience with G&L as well and if you look at the Legacy line which i believe is their cheapest USA made line, you would have to compare that to equal Fender in price which is the MIA Deluxe Series! And i wouldn`t say that the G&L`s are built better!!!

But having said all that i am a G&L fan.The only things i don`t like about their guitars is the headstock shape and the narrow width necks!!!

I played 3 G&Ls a while back..... They just didn't feel right.... I don't know if they were lowend models or what but I wasn't very impressed.

Re: What's Up with G&L?

I have a G&L ASAT 3 and it sounds great. It is tele shaped and pretty solid. It was refinished in nitro and has a set of quarter pounders in it now. The only possible negative is the "bathtub" style pickup routing. I don't consider this a bad thing. It gives you options and is no worse than a trem cavity in my opinion. I love it.

Re: What's Up with G&L?

I've owned a G&L ASAT Deluxe, Legacy Deluxe, ASAT and a Comanche - they were all good guitars but not equal to the Suhr Classic I've had for the last year or so. I kept wanting them to be that good, I thought the G&L pickups were lifeless - bland sounding. I put some Suhr singles and humbucker in the legacy deluxe and that guitar came to life. I then played a Suhr classic and was immediately impressed with the playability, tone and quality of the guitar. I bought the suhr for $1800 new, much less than a custom shop fender and I can get almost that much for it now.

Re: What's Up with G&L?

I know someone who wants to sell his ASAT. When he gets me more details, I'll probably help him sell it. I wish I could buy it! When he gets me more details, I'll help him figure out a fair price. It has VERY few playing hours on it, because his plays acoustic most of the time (99.9%).

Re: What's Up with G&L?

I'd love an ASAT, but alas my project will have to fill the gap for my Tele gas!
