Ok, i know its something to do with wood quality, and the higher the better, but what exaclty are all those A's measuring? what seperates the AA maple top on a epi from the AAA maple top on a gibson?

Re: Whats with all the A's?

how much figure there is to the grain ..

single A .. slight flame or figure

5A .. super flame lotsa figuring.. etc

Re: Whats with all the A's?

I don't know if there's any real guidelines, because I see a lot of flamey Std's with no A's, and AA or AAA guitars with minimal figuring or even dead spots.
Usually, when you buy a Les Paul with an AAAAA rating, you're paying LARGE dollars, and getting a great flame top. Also, PRS needs to get their act together with the Ten Top rating. I've seen spectacular non 10 Tops, and mediocre figuring on what they consider a 10 Top. Maybe they're basing it on more than just figuring? I dunno.

Re: Whats with all the A's?

it is very subjective but it supposed to be how much of the board actually has figuring - not how nice the figuring is

Re: Whats with all the A's?

gotcha. Figured it was something like that as i had never heard the grading put on anything else ;).

Re: Whats with all the A's?

theres gotta be some sort of solid rule system, surely? people would be giving squier strats 10 tops otherwise :laugh2:
