What's your experience with the Epi Alleykat?

Played one today in a pawn shop and was pleasantly surprised-

Solid, good neck, finish, frets

Price was $299 and that's what they're going for on Reverb, they wound't negotiate, so I put it back-

But I liked it quite a bit and would be interested in your experience.

I used to have one. It was okay. A little neck heavy. A TonePros bridge really helped with tuning stability, though what I really wanted was a roller bridge.

I put 12’s on it — flatwounds.

How much cheaper than Reverb do you think the pawn shop should have sold theirs for?

Thanks for feedback... An Only Ok rating makes me feel better that I avoided GAS;)

As far as pawn shops, I go to them for 2 reasons.

1. Find something unusual
2. Get a great price

Best example is my Music Man 76 Hd130 4x10...like a twin on steroids and got it about half of average purchase cost and they are relatively rare in my part of the country.

So that's my motivation and I believe pawn shops do well when they price aggressively or negotiate because they are so different from music stores...

They buy in much lower than music stores
No support or guarantees
Usually hard to demo gear
Gear is usually below average confition.

So their only advantage for me is bird in hand + price and only a small % of my purchases are pawn shop as they seem to think someone will pay average selling price...

Case in point, local shop has a nice squire tele with SD designed gretsch like pups... Selling at Reverb prices... There for at least a year because they apparently paid too much to make a deal...

Interested in others pawn shop experiences...

Wanted to really like the AlleyKat I had. Could not find a usable tone at all with my setup at the time. Seemed like a good concept but sounded nasally and muddy regardless of my settings (using a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe plus several pedals at the time.)

Thanks for input!Since I didn't buy it, all of the negatives make me feel like a made a good decision.. ;)

Re: What's your experience with the Epi Alleykat?

I've always wanted one, think they look cool. Never tried one so I don't know how they feel or anything about quality. Price always seemed good to me too, especially when they were on special. One of these days I'll try one out and see.

Only problem is that I've been making so many guitars lately that I can't justify actually buying one. Besides, the ones I make are so much better in every way than anything I can afford to buy. But, still curious about the Alley Kat.

Re: What's your experience with the Epi Alleykat?

I have actually played them twice. I find it aesthetically cool.

The two times I played one, one was OK and the other was Pretty OK.

I'd say a thorough setup and a good pup would really make one pretty cool. I have no musical use for one though....

Re: What's your experience with the Epi Alleykat?

The best advice I could give someone thinking about an Alleykat or Wildkat is to trust your ears and your hands. And try a hollowbody Ibanez, or an Eastman, or a D’Angelico, or a Casino.

Re: What's your experience with the Epi Alleykat?

When the Kat series first came out, I almost immediately ordered a Wildkat in natural finish (don't remember if other colors were available then).

It was okay for what it was. Typical Korean Epi quality/issues. I had fun with it at the time. The best thing about it was the general design and the looks. It's a hollowed out solid body with a carved solid top, like a CS-336, not like your typical semi-hollowbody with bent sides, back, and top. It's a real looker too.

I sold it just a few years later just because I needed the money. For many years, I regretted selling it. Now, being pretty much over the whole souping up of cheap, poly-finished guitars, I do not regret it at all.

So, the Kat series is pretty much like a CS-336, but with better controls IMO (master volume in addition to a volume for each pickup). I wish Gibson made a high-end version of it, in addition to the CS-336. The Wildkat/Alleykat look way better to me than the CS-336.

I really liked those
I could only find those in the P90 versions
And while that is nice, it is it's own thing

But the semihollow LP size guitar
Is my current favorite layout

While my Epiphone Florentine doesn't have the bigsby and has Probuckers
It it consistently the one I'm drawn to

Yea Flatwounds are sweet

I split the difference in strings, I use the ground round daddario

Positives for me was a mini neck pup ( I'm a mini fanatic), neck felt good and extremely solid feel.

In retrospect, like Ace said, I really dont need one, but it was fun to mess with.
