What's your favorite distortion pedal?

I haven't bought a distortion pedal since the early 90s - a Boss Turbo Overdrive, that I ended up getting rid of for some reason when I got my Line 6, but think I might want to simplify my rig and pick one up. Which ones do you love and what do you love about 'em?

I love the ProCo Rat 2. It gets an awesome light crunch to heavy gain. Doesn't loose volume/power when you go from a chord to a single note. Best gain pedal I've ever used.

Note, this may be moved to Amplifier Central

Boss DS-1

classic

I also have a Joyo Ultimate Drive should be an overdrive but to my ears is a creamy distortion pedal

I'm currently using an MXR Bass DI for distortion on guitar and bass. With a noise gate, a blend knob to mix in the cleaner signal and a 3 band EQ with an extra clean channel to switch to, it's too versatile not to use. Kind of a wacky addition, but functional. Also love the Fulltone OCD for overdrive and I second the Boss DS-1 for total distortion.

I haven't used a true distortion pedal in a long time. I only use overdrives as a boost these days. But back when I did use one, the EXH Metal Muff was my go to pedal. I recommend it to people to this day.

The Metal Muff W/Top Boost was my main pedal until I got the Rat. Still a good pedal but for my playing and ears the Rat is a superior pedal (quiet when not playing.)

For a straight distortion pedal.. something that isnt a boost or overdrive I would say my favorite is the old Ibanez SM9. A bit of an oddball pedal its reminiscent of the boss HM2 or the DOD FX56 but has a 3 band eq that you can get some cool sounds out of.

Chandler Tube Driver. I tried one, one time and it was amazing to play. I hope to own one in the future.

I've never tried or owned anything that comes close to a Bogner Ecstasy Red, when it comes to a distortion box that transforms any amp into fire breather that's infinitely tweakable. Others may have a lot of gain, but the feel under the fingers doesn't emulate a highgain tube amp as well as the XTC Red.

I've played one of those too. That's a killer pedal. If I don't get the Tube Driver, XTC Red is my choice.
