Whats your opinion on Dimarzio Evolution's?

Got a old strat with 2 single's and a humbucker bridge. I got a JB in the bridge at this moment. Would like more clarity out of that position. I love the JB for heavy rock stuff but clean its not usable. I would like a clearer sounding pickup for clean stuff but it also needs to do heavier stuff( which the JB does so well). The reason I ask about the Evolution's is because a buddy of mine as one lying around he's not using. Ive never played one, how does it compare with the JB? does it have more highs? Do you have any other pickup recommendations?

I run all three of the Evolutions (Evolution, Evo 2, and Evolution neck) in the bridge position of Strats. They're all great for the heavier stuff, and I'm thinking it'd clean up pretty well.

They are horribly bright and if you rest your hand on the strings you can actually hear your heartbeat, they are so sensitive.

That said, while I admire his musical brain, I think Steve Vai's tone is awful and his playing sometimes sounds like pinching the end of a balloon while letting the air out.

Not a fan.

The Evolutions are very well balanced pickups. They have a fat round and punchy bass, growly midrange and a precise but sweet treble attack. I wouldn't call them bright or shrill by any means. The SD that they compare the best with is the Full Shred, except the Evolution has the bass that the Full Shred lacks.

Re: Whats your opinion on Dimarzio Evolution's?

I've had all 3, the only one I hung onto was the Evo Neck.

Evo 1 has a bright edge to it, Evo 2 is more balanced. Evo Neck is actually quite warm to my ears, somewhere between an air noton and a paf-pro.

The main thing I noticed with all three is string definition - you hear exactly what you play even in chords. Its a love it or hate it feature, and it was not for me in the bridge models. To give you a sense of my taste, I didn't keep the full shred bridge either, but it was closer to a crunchy sound than the Evo's were and I got good power chording with that.

Some folks swear by them though...

the EVO is definitely clearer than a JB and will play metal without breakin a sweat. the JB and evo have very little in common two totally different animals. the evo is very unforgiving if you make a mistake it will stand out like you lit up a I JUST MADE A MISTAKE neon sign! LOL
it is tight, aggressive, raw, high output and very present in the mix. try it what do you have to lose?

Re: Whats your opinion on Dimarzio Evolution's?

I'm not a fan of the Evolution although I have heard many people sound really good with them. I think the Evo 2 is an improvement over the Evolution. The Evo neck pickup is also very good. It has a great neck lead tone and sounds decent through a clean amp. The thing that I do like about the Evolution is that it has a really neat wah sound.

If I were to go with a ceramic pickup, the D Sonic would be my first choice. It's also a fairly bright pickup but it's a smooth top end and it sounds better than the Evo in a wider range of clean, cleanish, overdrive tones. (Installed with pole pieces facing the bridge)

Re: Whats your opinion on Dimarzio Evolution's?

I really have absolutely no idea why people think they Evo is so freakin' bright. Yeah, it's definitely got some presence about it, but anybody with half a brain that can EQ an amp will be able to make it usable.

It's got a really killer lead tone because of the psychotic amount of upper mids. The bass is wicked tight and the treble is sharp and focused. The harmonics are ridiculous and your mistakes are about twice as loud as the rest of the notes...I have no idea why

The one thing about Evos is that you have to use a LOT of gain to make them sound good. Unless you really drive them hard they sound thin and weak, but they totally sing if you have the right rig!

Re: Whats your opinion on Dimarzio Evolution's?

I used one for years. Its tight and bright, with good treble and high mids. I like em. I want to try the second one, and see how it compares.

Re: Whats your opinion on Dimarzio Evolution's?

Evo neck FTW, real good as a bridge pickup too. No love for the bridge though.

Re: Whats your opinion on Dimarzio Evolution's?

Just installed the Evolution in the bridge a few days ago and just played with my band. So here's what i think about them.
Defiantly has more high end than the jb with a tighter lower bass punch. However the the JB is alot tighter pickup overall but lacks the clarity/ highs of the Evolution. The Evolution sounds looser to me. So the Evolution sounds pretty cool to me( just alittle to hot for my taste) however I noticed right away what many of you have been saying, ''your mistakes are about twice as loud as the rest of the notes...I have no idea why'' they are so sensitive, I have been having to work on my damping technique in order to play leads. Why is this? Its a nice pickup aside from this quality? You pickup gurus have any ideas?

Re: Whats your opinion on Dimarzio Evolution's?

this guy says the EVO is the closest he could find to the EVH wolfgang pu?

It seems to have "spikes" in the highs. I know tons of people use 250 pots with em, but I never did. The EVO 2 is suppose to not have that quality. Thats why I wanna try em.

Re: Whats your opinion on Dimarzio Evolution's?

I think the "sensitivity" that people talk about is the Evolutions potting, it might be lightly potted? I have two 6 string and one 7 string version and after I repotted the two 6 string versions the microphonics went away. The 7 string version doesn't have that midrange warble the 6 string versions have.

Re: Whats your opinion on Dimarzio Evolution's?

I know that I really hate improper or lacking use of apostrophes.

Re: Whats your opinion on Dimarzio Evolution's?

The EVO splits well. I personally prefer a bit less gain from a neck pickup, but it does high gain neck tones pretty well.

Re: Whats your opinion on Dimarzio Evolution's?

I have used, and like it in the neck position, but I could never get along with it in the bridge.
