Re: What's your preferred scale length?

I like the short scale a lot because it has Chunck when playing barre chords, or triads, etc,.. That said, I always thought of it like this.. Gibson scales are like a bunch of blues guys singing in harmony.. when strummed.. A strat scale guitar sounds like a bunch of pro's singing in perfect unison together.. Not as raw as the Gibson.. I mean if you listen to AC/DC for instance, you get the best of both words because he uses an SG, that even though it has a short scale, it is a light weight guitar with kinda a Strat sound.. barely.. The PRS and Carvin guitars though have both the Gibson / Strat sound which is a hybrid and is probably the best mix.. But I still like playing the Gibson, as it's easier to play with 10's or 11's.. and you can get some serios chunk...chuga chuga sound.. but I'm an 70's and 80's player.. Getting old.. 46.. hehe..

This has probably been asked hundreds of times before, but what the hell.

Me, I like 25.5". I didn't always feel a difference, but the lowered tuning I'm currently using is what made me take notice. I've shied away from my Dean since dropping down to A, & it's because the low string is too floppy (& I currently use a .064 low string). I'll try going to a .068, but I'm pretty much done with that guitar if the larger string doesn't feel better, or if I go back to a higher tuning (drop C, maybe).

And this is a drag! Because there are many guitars still on my GAS list that are 24.75". I still lust after them just as much as I ever did, but I know that I won't be happy playing them unless I keep them tuned higher.

Re: What's your preferred scale length?

Both are good, with Gibby scale top frets are very crowded, but riffing is better (touch-vise) For the sound, I like em both, 25,5 '' Strats for Blackmore-style hard rock/classical shredding, Gibby for metal/rock á la Ozzy/Thin Lizzy. For Maiden, they both work well :D

Re: What's your preferred scale length?

Gibbo scale for me, and I dig Paul's scale too.

anything longer just doesn't work for me thanks to my short fingers and a slight birth defect/inherited characteristic with my pinkies. I do like that on a fender scale the upper frets have a bit more room inbetween, but it in no way makes up for the extra stretching I have to (attempt to) do on the lower frets.

24.75" scale with either Fender or Gibbo spacing works fine

Re: What's your preferred scale length?

i prefer the fender scale. i think the low strings sound better and i like the stiffer feel. i have and play a few gibson scale guitars and it doesnt effect me much but i prefer the longer scale.

anything shorter than 24.5" is really too small for me. there isnt enough tension and the frets are too close together up high on the neck for my bent fingers

Re: What's your preferred scale length?

Yeah, I concur.. I do feel like Gibson's scale or even shorter scale like the Fender Mustang I think it is, and some other guitar which was 24" scale make it really easy to play for youngsters and for bending strings for bluesy stuff or for Pink Floyd stuff, although you need brighter pickups on a short scalled guitar.. I think most Gibson's sound Muddy if you're not careful. Hence the reason some folks like Zakk use the EMG's..
