Early Seventies is also about the same time that Gibson/Norlin introduced the five piece maple neck on Les Paul models. Changing the pot value would have compensated to some extent for the extra brightness contributed by the maple compared to mahogany.

Yeah I was gonna say. The 70s is where gibson started making the changes, like the 5 piece maple necks and the new headstock joint was different too. They wound the pickups all differently too. This was also the time the Les Paul returned because of popular demand after being discontinued in 1960. I guess its only natural Gibson decided to make some changes to the original design. So that's likely when they changed the pots.

Mini humbuckers is why. They're the perfect pot to use with them. Not so perfect with full-size HBs.
