When did the prices for small parts go up so much?

Mr 9finger

Been doing some shopping for my next project and everything I usually use has went up $2/$3 on most of the items. I see the biggest jump on electronics, but a lot smaller hardware stuff like metal flat mount pickup rings has went way up. It's definitely going to push me way over budget on this one.

They're just trying to keep pace with the growth rate of shipping costs.

I can't say I've tried these, but they might work for you: http://www.guitarfetish.com/Guitar-Hardware_c_37.html.

I got hardware from Guitar Fetish and it was all cheap junk made in China. Most of it didn't fit right and eventually I ended up replacing everything I put on the guitar. I should have just returned it when it got here. I think they make their hardware out of used Bud Light cans.

I just got a set of locking tuners and Schallery type straplocks from there for my last build and they seem really solid. I wasn't super concerned on the tuners since it's got a Floyd on it, so I took a leap of faith. They were the right color and had the convenience of locking the strings at the tuner so why not eh? Turned out to be a really good set of tuners for $35. Strap locks, well, their strap locks. Not much to say on those.

Yep, I just blew $50 on small parts from Stew-Mac.

I know the feeling bro. I've got that much in my cart for 3 pots, an on/on/on mini toggle, 1/4" panel jack" and shipping. Now I just need some screws of a few sorts, knobs, and tuners.

When it comes to electronics: stay away from guitar-oriented shops... they'll overprice everything from wire to caps and pots.

Just buy from a good online retailer and you'll save tons... I realized this when I started building pedals and the price for caps was ridiculously low compared to what I paid from Stewmac and others.

Smallbear electronics
Mouser
Tayda

All great places.

The US dollar isn't worth what it used to be worth, so stuff costs more to import than it used to. The cost is passed on to the consumer.

This.

Buy electronic supplies from electronic supply dealers. You might have to buy in bulk for some things just to make it worth their time, but it's worth it if you can get caps for 10 cents each.
The online guitar-oriented places are trying to be "dealer to the stars" type of thing with their prices, plus they're usually some guys in a basement hoping to avoid getting a real job, and their markup reflects that. Radio Shack is hit or miss, cuz they know that people who are building the prototypes for the next cruise missile or other military hardware shop there, and want some of that Guvmint Taxdallah Pie.
