this happens with the 1959RR. i don't recall this happening with my old 1982 JCM 800 2204.

so by turn off, i mean disengage so that no notes are amplified.

why is it doing this? is it normal? can it damage the speakers? should i take it in to get looked at?

How long do you let the tubes warm up? Do you turn it on with: Standby on< Power on< Wait < Standby off < ??? < PROFIT!!!???

As a Marshall user for ions..Could just be a bad standby switch..

i warm up the tubes for a good 5 minutes or more.

before i turn it on both power and standby are off. when it's turned on, i turn on the power with the standby off. when i'm ready i turn on the standby.

Re: when i turn off the standby it makes a loud pop sound

hmm...maybe. it's a brand new amp though. why would a switch go bad so soon?

When I was a mechanic for GM for several years,we'd sometimes have a faulty part even though it was brand new,so don't count on the new amp equation...I'm just knowing from experience because I replaced the standby switch on my own 73 50 watter you see behind me in my avatar...When I was fixing/modding amps,I replaced a few of the switches also..That's why I threw that out there...Not saying that's your problem, but could be,and a cheaper fix!

Don't mess around in there! Take it somewhere and have a pro look at it.

well i just tinkered around and it's likely not an issue...before i guess i would flick the switch slowly or something and that would cause the pop. i just flicked it quickly and i didn't hear anything. i'll continue to flick it off quickly to avoid the noise.

Re: when i turn off the standby it makes a loud pop sound

...Where do you have the volume set when you take it off standby?

Have you tried popping it off standby, then turning up the volume?

Re: when i turn off the standby it makes a loud pop sound

My amp does the same but when I switch the standby on after warming the amp up. What's the issue here?

Re: when i turn off the standby it makes a loud pop sound

This is most likely fly back voltage. I imagine the amp has a choke and the placement of it is causing voltage to go the quickest route possible which is usually the standby switch.

This is nothing to worry about but is annoying. It can be fixed by placing a cap from the hot side of the switch to ground.

However with it being new i would definitely send it back and get it sorted out.

Another reason to not use/have a SB Switch.
Try leaving it in the Off position, and just turn your amp on and off with the power switch.
Your SB Switch may be getting flashed pretty bad. You could try replacing it..... would not cost that much to see if it helps.
As others have said, I would imagine the choke is doing what it is designed to do, resist a change in current, and you are experiencing "inductive kick". It can seriously arc the switch.
Just a guess on my part.
Best

Re: when i turn off the standby it makes a loud pop sound

yeah the consensus is the switch is arcing. POS. my buddy advises to cut the ground plug off the plug in to solve these annoying "noise" issues. i'll take it back to the shop to get the switch looked at. i hope they don't have to ship it back to england.

With friends like that.....
Do not cut the mains ground from the plug.
Good luck at the shop. Amps can be a trying experience at times.
Hang In There

If I had a nickel for everytime I came across a bad NEW alternator/starter/battery/sensor I'd have a quarter! It does happen.

Yep and that's why I threw that out there! ;o) Still just sounds like a cheap/faulty SB switch..

Re: when i turn off the standby it makes a loud pop sound

so i brought the amp to my friends place and it was plugged into his power bar, with a surge protector i'm sure and it didn't make the pop sound when i put it on standby. what gives?
