When someone says an amp sounds modern...

Re: When someone says an amp sounds modern...

when i hear the word modern I think of poeple toe tapping on all their different pedals, huge low end, and playing powerchords.

and that was't derogatory, it was just the image in my head:)

Re: When someone says an amp sounds modern...

How about the Vai's and Petrucci's of the world? I think they have pretty modern sounds from modern amps. Modern to me is tight and crisp, more gain than you'll ever need (I never go past 12 o'clock) and solid thump in the bass and a sound that can be fizzy if not eq'ed right.

For all the negative aspects of bad modern amps, there are equivalent setbacks for bad vintage amps, not enough gain at low volumes, flabby bass...

Re: When someone says an amp sounds modern...

I think more Mesa and less Marshall. Scooped mids and tight low end.

By those criteria, Soldanos really don't fit since they're voiced more like Marshalls and don't have the big bottom that I consider "modern".

Re: When someone says an amp sounds modern...

To me modern is more or less scooped mids and hi-gain. Also it's maybe a bit more defined, but not so airy... more of a straight tone... if that makes sense... I could post samples if you'd like...
