When we say "Cleans", what do we generally mean?

Re: When we say "Cleans", what do we generally mean?

I just think of clean as no distortion. Delay, reverb, chorus, or any other modulation, filter, or compression is ok as long as there is no distortion. On a couple of single channel amps that I had, I set it to super sparkling clean, and then got all my distortion from the pedal.

This pretty much sums it up....

That is beautiful!

Clean to me is a Fender Tele or Strat thru a Twin, shimmering, spanky clean, with a touch of compression. Overdrive is a Tube Screamer thru a Twin, with a low gain setting. A Gibson ES335 thru a VOX AC30, with both humbuckers selected, is a nice glassy clean as well.

It varies. Sometimes I like a super open sound with a present delay, sometimes I like a thicker, more compressed sound with a hint of breakup.
It just depends on what I'm playing and the setup I'm through.

When I say "cleans" I mean everything from Jimi doing the Wind Cries Mary or Little Wing to Mark Knopfler doing Sultans of Swing to Wes Montgomery doing West Coast Blues to BB King doing the Thrill Is Gone.

This, and BungalowBill's vid post, sum it up for me. I'm ok with modulation and timing effects. Clean would mean lack of overdrive, distortion, etc...

Re: When we say "Cleans", what do we generally mean?

For me it means getting the most "natural" sound that your guitar can give you thru your amp speaker at a volume that won't overdrive the amp. After all, were there any clean/od/chrunch/lead channels when the guitar amps were invented?

For me it is important to have the ablility to play loud withouth the amp getting overdriven. Don't get me wrong, I do like overdriven sound but it is just that some times I want to have the option to play loud enough and still get a clean tone. Could that be the reason why multi-channel amps where invented?
