Where are you putting your boost?

Re: Where are you putting your boost?

What if the boost is basically an OD with the gain down? Does is still behave as a boost?

Re: Where are you putting your boost?

If I'm using an amp with an FX loop, then I'll usually use my boost in the FX loop.

If I'm using an amp without an FX loop, then I plave the booster at the end of the chain, so that it acts over everything else in my FX chain.

Re: Where are you putting your boost?

TS-9 Mod Plus (boost)> TS-9 Baked Mod> Fender

TS-9 Mod Plus (boost only dirty channel)> Mesa (Line 6, Lexicon, Chandler in effects loop)

Re: Where are you putting your boost?

I use my boost in my FX loop to crank up overall level of my basic sound. If I put it in front of my amp I get extra distortion since I'm hitting the preamp in my amp harder. If you don't have an FX loop, I'd add one! It isn't too hard or too expensive to have done and seriously increasing your setup felxibility...

I am not so sure you get more/added distortion from the pedal, but if you do it is very very minimal, unless you have the drive turned up also. It will drive the channel harder to give you more distortion overall as you turn the knob up. You will get some coloration from the pedal. I do find I get a lot more sustain if I put it in front though.

Just for the record, I think everyone boosts their signal differently. My settings on the TS are drive and tone all the way down, and level up 3/4 of the way. I think that is more traditional when people say they are boosting their signal. If you use the drive you will get a bunch more distortion, especially if it is a distortion/od pedal. That just sounds like crap to me though, but some people do mix the drive and tone in. Whatever your taste.

Using a TS in this way colors the tone, correct?

A TS-9(OD pedal) is a different story than a boost pedal(no drive), but on many amps, particularly tube amps, some distortion can be found if you hit the input really hard, particularly if you're getting a fair amount of clean gain from the preamp to begin with. A lot of people use boosts this way to get more dirt out of their old, non-distortion channel amps. If you put a boost in front of an OD pedal the boost will cause more distortion as well because you're hitting the OD cirtcuit harder.

Re: Where are you putting your boost?

Last pedal before the amp. Since I usually only use it for a volume boost during solos that's where it needs to be.
