Where can I find propper pickup height adjustment screws?

First off sorry for the multitude of new threads today, this project has just been throwing me curveballs.

As it turns out the stock pickup height screws from my epi don't work with these burstbuckers. They have both too fat a shaft and are not long enough to deal with the longer "ears" on the Gibson pickups.

Anyone know where I can find these? preferably locally? I really wanna get this project done but it keeps holding me up :argh:

I see what you did there. ;)

The Gibson pickups ought to have come with the correct screws supplied. The usual mail order suspects have what you need. StewMac, for example.

I'm just trying to take this board to a new height ;)

I bought these used and it's my first time swapping pickups... I never even though about the screws not matching :(

I was hoping I could find something local that would work but after a trip to home depot, lowes, and radioshack I've come to the conclusion that I'm screwed. I'll have to order some.

Ooh, look. Choice of three finishes.

Shipping charges are disproportionately high. If you suspect that you may be playing this pickup changing game often, consider ordering a generous number of screws. If I were forced to choose just one finish, it would be black. There is a point at which partially worn off black finish and well-tarnished nickel look pretty much identical.

Find your nearest music store; if they have any repair capability at all, they should be able to come up with a selection of screws for you to try, and if they are even half-decent, they won't charge a bean for them

Re: Where can I find propper pickup height adjustment screws?

There's only 1 local music shop within an hour of here and they're really really small. I don't believe they even do setups let alone repairs. So I guess stewmac it is.

Re: Where can I find propper pickup height adjustment screws?

They'll be at any decent music shop, and even at some crappy ones (e.g. Guitar Center).

StewMac is just about the worst place you can get guitar parts. They are just plain overpriced on almost everything (including shipping), their store brand parts are not very high in quality, and they have a really crummy selection and won't special order anything. Try any number of places before them, such as Mojo Music, Guitar Parts Resource, Guitar Nucleus, Antique Electronics Supply, etc. The only thing StewMac is any good for is their 3/8" flush trim top bearing router bit, a part which seems near impossible to find anywhere else. It isn't even a good quality bit, and it's overpriced at $22 plus exorbitant shipping. But I need it, and it seems to be the only one on the market, so I'm stuck with it.

HTH,

Re: Where can I find propper pickup height adjustment screws?

Try a hobby shop - Like a Hobbytown USA.

Re: Where can I find propper pickup height adjustment screws?

The pickups should really come with height adjustment screws. At least I thought they did....

I felt stupid one time I scrounged up a couple mismatched screws and then later found the plastic baggie that had the screws and springs that had fallen out of the new pickup box!

Re: Where can I find propper pickup height adjustment screws?

Come to think of it - I found the right size at an independent hardware store once. Might try one of those if there are independent stores left in your area. Size should be 3-48.

Epi are likely metric.

Consider getting complete set of "DiMarzio Rings" (archtop im guessing for epi)

Dont get the cheapo korean proline, they are thin teensy flat things, flimsy too. Check whether dimarzio rings include all springs and screws, if not, get dimarzio "humbucking mounting hardware kit" (note : different screws for neck and bridge versions, ORDER ONE OF EACH, its per humbucker not per guitar

Bonus: can be had from musiciansfriend, can often get free shipping there (allparts charges $8 flat rate)

Locally, 3-48's are a pain to find, they usually dont stock any that long (but check guitar & pickups, perhaps you dont need em that long? If so, any proper size 3 should do...dont confuse with M3, those are the huuuge fat bolts mounting stuff like super 70s and greco pups in old japs, often in 2+1 screw layout

Not exactly Adieu. 3-48 means it's an SAE #3 screw with a pitch of 48 threads per inch and has nothing to do with the length so not all SAE #3 screws will fit.

The Metric screws are M3 and are larger in diameter as Redbowties88 stated. ;)

Re: Where can I find propper pickup height adjustment screws?

There's always the option of cross threading... ;)

No - don't do that!!!!

One tip I have is before you need them get some 3-48 brass nuts and have them on hand in case you strip one or acquire a humbucker whose holes were drilled for direct mounting. Needs to be brass so you can solder them to the mounting legs. Probably can also use a piece of sheet brass drilled/tapped for a 3-48 hole.

Wait i knew that... It was late, didnt explain properly: local stores rarely stock 3-48's IN LENGTHS AS RECOMMENDED BY MANUFACTURERS (and included with new pups/rings). ....

-B-U-T-

if the legs arent ridiculously long (in which case you could have other difficulties on install anyway, such as cavity rout too shallow etc), and if you keep pups close to strings in their optimal position, then SHORTER 3-48's WILL WORK. The ones sold on guitar sites have lenth to spare, depending on your pickups' chassis height, legs, and ring height, you might be able to get away with < 1in, definitely 3/4ths enough for some pups, maybe even 1/2" for shallow pups like DMZ airzone mounted high in tall rings w/ recessed screwholes. Just gotta cut springs shorter
