Where is the best place to buy pickup magnets?

I found A2, & A5 on Stew Mac and Allparts websites, but no A8.

Hate to sound like the noob that I am, but where do you guys get your magnets from?
I found a bunch on ebay, but didn't want to buy in bulk. I would like to buy a couple A5's and A8's to experiment with.

Also, is there a difference in magnet size for tremolo spaced humbuckers or are the poles just spread apart more?

Any help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Use the same size mag in regular spaced buckers or trem spaced. Many of the forum members buy from addiction-fx on ebay. If you don't see what you want just phone them and Denis will get you anything that you need.

HTH,

Re: Where is the best place to buy pickup magnets?

Pepe, thanks for supplying the address, I couldn't find it when I made my post.

Re: Where is the best place to buy pickup magnets?

Right on! You guys are awesome!
I have a JB in a Schecter that you (GuitarDoc) pointed me in the direction of using a C8 pickup in the bridge.
I'm thinking that money is tight for the rest of the month, so I have nothing to loose by experimenting with the JB that is in the guitar and making it a JB8.
I was also thinking about trying an A2 magnet (or A8 just for laughs) in the Jazz neck pickup too.

I can't replace them till next month, so it will give me a nice project that doesn't involve modifying someone else's amp.

Re: Where is the best place to buy pickup magnets?

I put an A8 into a JB & like it quite well. It tightened up the bottom & seems to be better balanced, not as "mid-honky". The JB8 also splits nicely, slightly "teleish" split. I had tried a UO A5 in the JB first and it lacked focus to me.
I put a UO A5 in the Jazz neck pickup in the same guitar & like the warmth & roundness of it. It still cuts well but has better bottom & less harshness.
I do clean, blues & rock, no metal with them. Very cheap & easy to try, mags from Addiction-Fx.
(Both in an all mahogany Parker Fly Mojo)

Ok, so now I am a bit more confused!

I just looked at Addiction FX ebay store.
He has the following options for UO A5:
Magnetized
Full Charge
Rough Cast

I just want to make sure that I get the right ones. I am not looking for vintage tone, just warmer and more full.
Thanks again for all of the help!

Thanks for posting the Fx-addiction address LtKojaK. I ordered the UOA5 in 2.444 length, I hope I ordered the right one. I'm planning on replacing the A5 in the JB.

I also want to thank those that have encouraged others like me to swap mags and I hope you'll be there once I try and install it.

Re: Where is the best place to buy pickup magnets?

Get the UOA5 magnets fully charged and roughcast. Get A5 fully charged and polished/smooth. A8 charged/polished. A2 charged/roughcast.

Re: Where is the best place to buy pickup magnets?

Ok, last question.....for now.
How hard is it to get the metal cover off of my pickups? I remember taking a set apart as a kid, but I wasn't concerned with keeping the pickups back then. I'm pretty sure that I broke them.

Should I use a soldering gun (high powered) or a simple 40 watt iron?

I'm going with 2 of the UOA5, 2 A2 and 2 A8. Should give me a lot of room to experiment with.

I'm also wondering how an A8 would sound in the Tone Zone that is currently in my JS1000!

NEVER, EVER use a soldering gun working with magnetic p'ups.

It'll affect the magnet in a completely unpredictable way.

Don't forget to get A4 magnets. they're my favorites.

Some guys use a dremel tool others use a utility knife and keep scoring until you cut through.

Re: Where is the best place to buy pickup magnets?

Do not use a soldering gun. I think Seymour recommends using a 25 W Iron. It is there somewhere in the FAQs.

Re: Where is the best place to buy pickup magnets?

So, can I unsolder the covers with a 40 watt iron? Or is there a better way?

A 40-watter is a tiny little bit on the wimp side for covers, but you can do a lot worse.

I use a 100-watter for my covers, but I do this for paying customers, so I just don't skimp on tools! ;)
