Where to find the coupling capacitator?

I have a Hiwatt T10H head tube head with the more or less classic 12AX7 preamp-tube and EL84 power-tube setup (home-made partially open back speaker cab with 12" Texas Heat). The tone is quite nice from 7th fret and up. Below there is some bottom missing and the sound is not as full bodied as i would have wanted. Looking around for a mod to help with this I see that replacing the coupling capacitator might be an option (thinking 0.47 or 0.1mF). I have modded some pedals before so I am not scared of going in there with the soldering iron to replace a component (yes, i am aware of the veryvery high voltages going around in there).

But, not being a electronics guy, my question is simply: how do I locate the correct cap? So it is between the preamp tube (pin 1?) and the power tube (pin 7?), but there is some other stuff in there aswell. I would assume it is the first thing that happens after the output from the preamp, but.. not sure. Any tips&tricks?

The PCB appears to be a two-layer thing, and without unscrewing tube sockets and power-transformer, I cannot see the back-side, so my plan was to await some advice before taking it to parts. All components are on the front side though.

Something about "not being a electronics guy" and "where do I find the coupling capacitor" makes me think 3 years from now I'll still be seeing 'ang - post count 1'

IME/IMO Having a 10-watt EL-84 based amp and expecting to mod it to get bottom out of it is kind of a futile proposition. The way to get more bottom is a different amp, and not EL-84s. Try something 6V6 based for lower power range, or 5881 based if you can deal with a little more power/volume.

You might very well be right, but that does not mean it is all wrong to ask a question for a problem one has, right? Anyway, It might absolutely be a futile project, but still worth trying, if not only to get experience with doing such mods. Thanks for your reply.

Re: Where to find the coupling capacitator?

Mojo Musical Supply carries all the normal value amp caps. SoZo capacitor sells direct as well. Just make sure you know what you're doing in regards to high voltage and discharging electrolytic capacitors. Google it. No reason you can't bump a cap in the tone stack a bit to increase the lows.

Re: Where to find the coupling capacitator?

I think the OP is asking where to find it in the amp, not where to buy one(?).

It's really hard to tell you without seeing a schematic and/or pictures of the guts of the amp. Looking at spec sheets of the tubes, it will most likely be between pin 1 or pin 6 of the 12AX7 and pin 2 of the EL84, but I can't guarantee that. So, twiddle at your own risk. A schematic would be most helpful.

Re: Where to find the coupling capacitator?

No pics of the board or a schematic on the web anywhere that I can find. If you can post a hi-res picture of the circuit board it would be much easier for one of us to see if we can help.

Re: Where to find the coupling capacitator?

Thanks for all replies. Much appreciated. The solution turned out to be a new amp. An Egnater Rebel 20 appeared for sale and now it is mine :-)
