so i finished building my 18 watt TMB kit a while back. i like it and i think it sounds great, but the problem is that now i'm addicted to building kits. i kinda want to build another marshall, but need to decide which one.

Wow. Guess you got your answer. The JTM45 is a good platform to start on, as it's probably a bit less complex than the other two. After you get it done, you can send it to me for "testing"...:naughty:

Re: which amp to build next???

Hey Chops? How difficult was it to build your kit? I'm thinking about ordering some kind of Ceriatone. Maybe an 18 watt or a Plexi. I think I would get the assembled one though.

i was looking at the ceriatones as well for my next build. i've heard good things about their kits, although shipping is a little steep.

i built the TMB kit from weber, and it was a pretty smooth build. the only issues i ran into had to do with lead dress, some of the wires in there are very picky about what other wires they are physically close to, and caused a lot of unwanted noise. but the schematic and layout that's posted on the site was clear and relatively easy to follow. i had a good time with it :)

i'm thinking of just buying the chassis and faceplates from ceriatone, and the guts from turretboards.com, and perhaps mercury magnetics iron if i can swing it. it's still in the planning/sourcing out parts and prices stage, but whichever circuit i decide to build i'm going to try to go all out with it.

Re: which amp to build next???

Ceriatone has a very good reputation, but if you're just buying a chassis and faceplates there are North American sources that will probably cost less after shipping. Take a look at Mojo Musical supply - great cabinets and really well made chassis. Shipping for a cab would be a LOT less than from Malaysia unless I'm grossly mistaken.

The odd thing is that you can usually get their parts for less from other dealers like S2Amps or Marsh Amps. Marsh seems to have a great deal on a JTM45 chassis and faceplate combination, and I've had really good experience ordering from Mike.

Mercury makes great iron, but it's extremely expensive unless you can get a dealer discount. S2 offers a 30% discount on their trannies, but the +25 pricing is even less than that. Hoffman Amps has excellent trannies, mostly Heyboer IIRC.

Hope this helps,

Chip

good points there, excellent info. i'll keep all of that in mind!

Re: which amp to build next???

I'd go for the plexi, myself. I have an 18w tmb and a jtm-45 and I think they're a bit more in the same vein than the 18w vs. plexi. That said, I haven't completed my ext cab and my 18w is with a g12h, so they may be more different that I realize-also, I haven't really had a lot of time to spend with the JTM-45, but I'll get there!

I used metroamp for the JTM and really liked their support/forum, etc., but I haven't shopped around that much for price comparisons and so forth. I agree w/Chip, I think you'd be able to get good parts from the us-metro is in Michigan.

Re: which amp to build next???

I'd go with the JCM-800. Classic sounds, they will never die!:firing::firing::firing::firing:
