BBQ or ToneZone. In certain guitars CC's might end up too round, kinda dark.

BTW MegaDrive was mentioned before, that pickup is NOT dark at all. In fact I guess it is the first pickup DiMarzio did with the unbalanced coil design. It measures like 16.whatever, has a5 mags, and is in fact a bright pickup!

Something more about the BBQ: it has some kind of signature sizzle at the top-end that makes cutting through the mix easier, if that matters. The Air Zone sounds smoother IMO. BTW, there are several "Air Zone vs BBQ" type threads here, Mongrollo, just do a search and enjoy.

One more thing: I see the Tone Zone isn't mentioned here. Quite a contradiction that the Air Zone's simply a TZ with that spacer-trick. I used to have a Tone Zone in another guitar and, dunno why, I felt it's somehow bright, even harsh sometimes. Do you also find that the TZ's got some strange brightness to it, or it's just my previous guitar that was different?

I never found the that the BBQ has any sort of "sizzle". I think that would be a characteristic of the distortion itself or the way the pickup and guitar intereacted with a specific amp or series of effects. To me the BBQ is just a dark, powerful yet sort of vintage voiced humbucker. It does have a bit of "push" so could possible overdrive certain pre-amps.

I TOTALLY agree with you about the Tone Zone though. WAAAAY too hot. Ten times more than the BBQ. I found the top end to be harsh and very hard to keep clean. For a pickup that sells by the virtue of being warm and fat, it certainly had a shrill quality to it. I liked the Air Zone much better. Clearer and warmer.
