Which celestion for a classic 30?

Hey all -
Been trying to decide what celestion speakers to throw in my classic 30. I did search the forums looking for advice, but all the previous threads dealt with classic 30s that were thrown in built speaker cabs. I'm planning on keeping it an open back, and thus far I think I've nailed it down between the vintage30, greenback, or G12H. I'm looking for that sort of classic 60s/70s rock tone (along the lines of Cream), and currently playing through an MIA strat with CS'69 pickups. I'd also like to be able to get a great, dirty tone for some Texas Blues.

I've never tried installing a speaker before, and was wondering how difficult it is. Can it be done with just a set of home tools?

Thanks in advance for the replies,
Ulf

Hard (impossible?) to beat the G12H30 for vintage 60's/70's tones. It's what I use. I also love the G12-65.

Every speaker you mentioned is a great speaker in it's own right, but I like the Greenback best in sealed 4 x 12 cabs. It lacks some bass in open back cabs and combo amps, although it always sounds great.

I love the Vintage 30, but it's an attempt at recreating the tone of a G12 Vox Blue with a ceramic magnet instead of alnico and many players want to hear something with a little less treble.

G12H30 is a great choice. I tend to find the V30 can make an EL84 amp a bit ugly in the midrange.

I dropped a pair of V30's into my TSL602 cab. I like them, they have a very good classic to hard rock tone. My stock speakers had alot of hi end bite to them, and the V30's tamed that and made the highs less piercing and more musical. The bass was tighter too without being boomy at all.

I'm also running a Heritage 12" and vintage 12" celestions in a 2x12 cab and those both sound great, especially when combined with the V30's.

BTW - its very easy to swap out speakers. All you'll probably need is a phillips screwdriver. I'd say try as many as you can.

Thanks for the advice everyone, appreciate it! Looks like I'll be trying out the G12H30 first.

Hellatone - G12H30, aged slightly great sound in a Classic 30, it's what I'm using in mine.

G12H30 is great for that era tones you described (and I'm a V30 fan). It worked wonders in my Crate - it's a very open sounding speaker, with extended highs and lows than the V30 (which I think will work well for the Classic 30).
