Re: which chord is this?

As always, it depends on the context. But 1st inversion C chord is what comes to mind first.

Re: which chord is this?

^ only if u'r playing solo gtr.

9 times outta ten, guitarist are playing parts that were written for a band situation. i.e. with a bass player.

I have a background in jazz. When I'm playing in a jazz ensemble, I bet u can count the # of chords I play with the root in them, on one hand. I don't play what the bass player is handeling. Leaves me room to make creative voicings and also be more choosy with my voicings.

Re: which chord is this?

actually, i am writing an instrumental song. my goal is to make it have a jazzy sound to to. the next to chords in the part of the song are d#7 into a e7.

hmmm, in this particular context, what should i call the chord. only because the chord i was asking about is the "main chord" of the song and i would like to know what key to solo in, unless i create a whole new rythme for the solo part......

and by the way, thanks everybody....

Re: which chord is this?

I use that chord alot. Move it up to the ninth fret and let the low E ring open and it's cool, very big sounding E major chord.

As it is, I'd think of it as a C chord with the third (E) in the bass.

It's a great way to voice a C chord if you're playing with a bassplayer who's holding down the Root.

As a C chord, hammer on the third (the E on the A string) and you can start to get into some cool Hendrix, SRV, Curtis Mayfield soul guitar stuff.

Experiment a little...

If the bass player plays an A against it, it'll be a Am7.

Re: which chord is this?

what seafoamer said .. also, what lew said .. i immediately 'saw' it as Amin7 with someone else playing the root in the bass

Re: which chord is this?

yeah lew, that is a nice thing there.....might u that somewhere...

i like doing that with chords where it works.....such as sliding an "e" chord shape with the notes ringing or sliding a c7 shape...
