My guitar came with 2 zebra pickups but I recently replaced the bridge pickup with an SD59 that I bought from eBay. The one I found happened to be all black.

Now I'm going to get a PG for the neck - which do you think looks better, an all black pickup to match the new bridge or stick with zebra and have the zebra in the neck and all black in the bridge like it is currently?

I kind of like the mismatched look, it has an odd custom look.

Here's mine:

Although for yours, I think I'd prefer matching.

Re: Which Colour Pickup for Neck?

Interesting PFDarkside. How come matching for mine particularly?

Initially I had it in my head that I'd get a cheap one from eBay just in case I didn't like it then I'd replace it with a new set of zebras but now I'm thinking spending £75 purely to change the colour of a piece of plastic would be a bit much lol.

The zebra pickups were one of the things that drew me to the guitar in the first place but because of the above point it's either mis-matched or matching black.

All black and switch all the rings/toggle/knobs to black also. IMO

I did consider that too. The tuners on the guitar are black so they could match that. But I looked up the orange PRS's that come with all black pickups and they come with cream rings so hard to tell how it would look.

Just don't get anything in pink for this one! lol

Your guitar is nicer than mine, I'd want to highlight the wood not the plastic. :)
I'd most prefer the Slash look, then the standard zebra, then black. You already replaced the bridge though, so I figure a new bridge is off the table.

Re: Which Colour Pickup for Neck?

I hate the look of mismatched pickups.

But I kind of understand why some people like it.

Re: Which Colour Pickup for Neck?

I couldn't live with the mis-match myself..
Another all black pick up required but there is no shortage of those is there..?!! They all come in double black..!!

My guitar is all white/cream and trying to find modern pickups in these colours is harder than it should be..

Re: Which Colour Pickup for Neck?

It would look equally good matched or not. You can always get covers, and the problem is solved (though it will slightly change the sound).

Re: Which Colour Pickup for Neck?

I've got a mismatched HB set in a guitar: a zebra neck and a double cream bridge, and it looks fine.

Re: Which Colour Pickup for Neck?

Not a fan of the mismatch myself.

I'd go black/black. I also like the idea of blacking out all the switches, rings and hardware so it matches.

Re: Which Colour Pickup for Neck?

reverse double black
so that its black over black
not black under black

Re: Which Colour Pickup for Neck?

I vote for black too.. your post about spending money just to match pups... I wasnt clear on that. But if you were saying you wanted zebra, but got black cuz of getting a good price, you can always get some bobbin toppers and make em zebra..

Re: Which Colour Pickup for Neck?

Always go with zebra if there's a choice.

You can get stickers to cover one of the double black coils I believe.

To clarify the "spending money" point...

My initial idea was to buy any colour 59 off eBay just to see if I was going to like it then, if I did like it, I'd buy a brand new zebra one.

However, now I'm in that situation (and I very much do like the 59) I've realised that if I bought a new zebra one I'd be spending a lot of money purely to change the colour and it's hard for me to justify that.

The neck pickup, however, I'll be buying new anyway (can't find a used PGn anywhere) so will have the choice of colours.

Appreciate the suggestions of the "bobbin topper" stickers but for me personally I couldn't live with there being a sticker on there.

Thanks to everyone who has posted and voted. Now this thread has highlighted the pickup ring colour issue - time to agonise over that choice now lol :D
