Years ago, a friend of mine had me wire in this odd set of pickups into his Ibanez RG350MDX. The combo was a Super 3 bridge, and an Evo bridge model in the neck. I told him he was crazy and that it wouldn't work, but he insisted. So after getting it all wired, restrung and set-up, I gave it a run with this odd combo. And let me say, I was AMAZED by not only the tone of the combo, but the unadulterated power and clarity they had to them, especially with the maple fingerboard. So this has stuck with me forever, and has me jonesing for a maple fingerboarded Ibanez -an RG350MDX preferred...

Now here is where I ask you more experienced tone wizards and gear gurus out there, what would be the best DiMarzio single coil to use with this humbucker combination??? The other issue I am having is what tuning I would have the guitar in. I have 2x 7-strings -one tuned standard, and one tuned down one whole step standard. So with this being the case, tuning is either going to be in drop C or drop C# - with the use of a Tremel-No to lock the trem for tuning changes if warranted.

But from what I tested these pickups in that guitar, it was in standard tuning E tuning. So naturally, this has me curious of something else with these pickups as well...
- Would the Super 3 be good for a tuning this low, or even down to say drop B? Or should I consider something else?
-What other H/S/H configuration pickups would you recommend for use in a guitar like this, with either of these lower tunings? I always found that DiMarzios usually work better in Ibanez guitars, but I know there's Duncans that work equally well as DiMarzios do.
-Recommendations can be made for bridge and neck humbuckers only, as this guitar would be primarily for metal and hard rock. A single coil could be recommended, but most likely won't be used much.

So I am open to your suggestions folks. Let me know what you guys would recommend.

Thanks all!

So you don't want a middle single coil? Or do you?

The Super3 has been one of my favorites for years and sounds great down to A. The only thing it lacks (for me) is that I've grown into liking a clacky attack because I don't use thick hard picks, and it doesn't have that. If you do, it will hella do whatever you want it to that low, although it could be too dark for some people. If you do lots of lead stuff and like a smooth throaty lead tone it's a solid choice too. Really underrated pickup.

No idea about a Evo B in the neck, but the specs aren't that different between the B and N models, and I have used the neck in both positions. It's been a while so I'd be hard pressed to give any advice other than I remember it wasn't tubby at all, very EMG 81 in the neck-like, but I can't remember much else. I know I regretted selling it for a while.

If I were gonna try that combo and wanted a middle pickup I'd probably go for a Fast Track II or a Chopper in the middle and just use a normal 5 way with no splits.

First off, thanks for the suggestion and input bro.

I consider a middle pickup, just because I won't have to try and get a new pickguard for just the 2 humbuckers. Even though it's primarily gonna be used for a lot of heavy stuff, I may do some clean stuff with it, and like versatility. So by suggesting either the Fast Track 2 or the Chopper really has me intrigued, especially when used with a Super 3.

As for wiring it, are you thinking a typical JEM wiring? This is what I was originally planning for it. I DO have a DiMarzio multi-pole 5-way switch, just incase I do decide to try and get creative for the wiring and experiment with coil splits... But I think a most basic 5-way pattern would be more than enough.

Again, thanks for the input, very helpful and very intrigued that much more now.

Anyone else got any pickup suggestions for this? I just read the article on SD pickups for Ibanez guitars, and it mentions that the Distortion set is another good choice too, but what about something like the Invader set? Would more than likely go with just the 2 humbuckers if going the route of the Invaders, but was considering something like an SSL-6 RWRP & tapped version... have a few ideas, but am really up in the air about it right now...

So any other thoughts or suggestions welcomed! Thanks again folks!

Okay, so there's a development in the case of a new 6-string. After discovering that the Ibanez I wanted - the RG350MDX - has become quite rare to obtain, I have found a rather surprising and unexpected as a substitute:

A Jackson of all guitars... it's a JS32 DKA-M. After spending a few hours playing it, I was completely amazed that a JS series could be such a great guitar. I can say for sure that these have gotten a LOT better since the earlier years, so it was surprising that I had picked such a guitar. So with this being the case, it still boils down to the pickups and needing swapping out. And this is where my dilemma comes into play as to what to put in it. I was originally thinking the Super 3 & Evo B combo, but now I am considering a few other options:

*Nazgul & Sentient set
*Invader set

So yet again, I ask those of you who have maple fingerboarded guitars what you think would be a good choice of pickups for this guitar. Tuning would more than likely be a drop C, for stuff like The Sword, C.O.C., Hatebreed, Zao, Static-X, ect... So let me know what you would recommend.

Thanks folks!

My favorite single coil of all time is the Dimarzio Blue Velvet. Unfortunately, they don't make it anymore. It was replaced with the True Velvet. For a true single coil I would start there.
