Which Duncans are closest to EVO's?

I'm curious which Duncan pickups would get the closest to the Dimarzio EVO sound ina basswood strat with a floyd? Love the Vai sound but not a big fan of the Dimarzio brand. thanks. hey, are the double creme pickups a more glossy plastic like the duncan product? My only other thought fir this instrument were the EMG 81 and 85 set but I think I am done with actives.

Really nothing at all comes close. Maybe a Demon but, the Demon is lower output. Maybe a Full shred but, nothing even comes close.

Are you a fan of the Dimarzio sound? If so, buy an Evo. If you won't use them because of their patents, get over it and buy an Evo.

:outahere:

Maybe an A8 JB would be the closest thing of the Duncans. Or perhaps the Full Shred with one row of slotted screws?

FWIW, I also won't buy Dimarzio stuff, even used.

The Evo bridge has a mid spike similar to the JB when playing lead, but the tightness and low mid power of the DD when playing rhythm. So, depending on which attribute you like best....

I think the DD is the closest, really...but it isn't the same.

Hmm, I guess the EVO's are it. I don;t like their bobbins, they look cheap. Thanks for the input. I guess I'll order some.

The Full Shred is closest but it is much brighter. A full shred neck and Evolution bridge would be a good combo.

Thanks much, I've tried the full shred and did not get on with it. Guess I'll move on. I do love my '78 and the '59's are great. but I'm looking for a set that do that higher gain stuff.

Well, I'm about a week in to trying out the Evo Bridge (not the evo 2). I was very skeptical as Dimarzio's had never been my thing. Didn't like the flat black bobbins, but they aren't bad. Sound wise, it is higher output than I'm used to, which is a goods thing. Seems to have alot more sustain, it's got a definite mid hump that I need to get used to, the highs sing very nicely. It does lack the lows that I normally get with my Gibsons or the '78. Keeper? maybe, I dunno yet.

In that respect it is similar to the DD, its not a huge low-end pup (I think the JB has more low end), but it is very defined and "tight" because of that. It does have a unique sound, it is one the DMs that I really like, but I didn't like the neck pup in that set.

None. No other Dimarzio sounds like it either. Get an Evo 2. It's a better pickup.

Re: Which Duncans are closest to EVO's?

I read on the DMZ forum that the Evo 2 is just an Evo with the airbucker air gap between magnet and coils? Maybe you could try putting your own spacers in to see if it improves the tone to your ears?
