Looking at replacing the Celestion special design speaker in my 5150iii 1x12 combo amp and the choices are dizzying. I think the relatively safe bet is an Eminence Legend, but I just saw that there are like 5 or 6 different types of Legends:
So which should I be looking at? The stock Celestion special design (is it their "V-Type"? I don't know, I haven't cracked open the amp yet) is very fizzy and kinda harsh, but the closed back combo does have some nice low end wallop.
I'd like something that didn't add too much, if any, of it's own breakup. I figure this would keep it from sounding fizzy and give it a little more body and a smoother sound in the mids and highs?
I'm thinking the Legend 1218 or the Legend V128/V1216 would be the best choices since they're higher wattage (i.e. less speaker breakup) and described as smooth, fat and mellow.
What say ye?
- Legend 1218 - 150 watts (american sounding-- smooth, warm?) delivers warm, smooth and fat American tone with a hint of smooth British break-up. Its coloration favors country, blues and jazz.
- Legend 1258 - 75 watts (american sounding?) vintage American growl, but with sparkle, definition and edgy top-end. Great for rock and roll, country, and blues. This Eminence speaker is an ideal vintage alnico Jensen replacement.
- Legend 1275 - 75 watts (british sounding?) British-voiced speaker is reminiscent of classic OEM tones from the past, with tight, punchy lows, warm mids and crisp, articulate, open highs.
- Legend GB128 - 50 watts (british sounding-- like a greenback perhaps?) If you're looking for that classic British sound, this is the speaker to have. This Eminence speaker will provide a warm low end and plenty of punch, and all the tonal characteristics embraced by many legendary guitar players.
- Legend V128/V1216 - 120 watts (british sounding but smoother mids and highs?) The Eminence Legend V128 12" 120 Watt Vintage British Tone Speaker has a British-manufactured cone that lends tonal characteristics to set rock guitarist's hearts afire. A Kapton bobbin for the voice coil allows this classic to handle up to 120W. Very mellow, but with lots of definition and rich tonal harmonic balance. Medium break-up modes. Very smooth.
