Re: Which Gibson SG's are the ones to get?

I've had Standards, a 70s deluxe and Faded Specials and honestly, I like them all. I've played a Classic with P90s and loved the sound but the setup was terrible (not that that would put me off) and I'd love to try a 61 reissue - I hear that those are the best, like I said though, I haven't played one.

Re: Which Gibson SG's are the ones to get?

Not a big fan of SG's but I had a Faded last year that had the big 50's neck...killer guitar, I wish now I hadn't sold it so fast.

Re: Which Gibson SG's are the ones to get?

I've liked most of them I've played, but I played a few faded specials when they came out and the fret ends and necks felt a bit rough to me. Could have just been the batch I played though.

I liked the finished, smooth feel of the standards with the neck binding and all the appointments that the "standard" comes with. Plus I really prefer the look of the trap inlays over the dots. To me, Gibsons don't look right without trap inlays, but that's just looks.

What I'd go most on is what I could get the best deal on. I think you can get a great deal on a used standard if you shop right.

Not the ones from the '70's, from late 1971 forward. Ugly, and the dimensions were all changed, for the worse. It wasn't until 1986 when Norlin sold Gibson, that SG's went back to the original 1960's design (finally!).

Re: Which Gibson SG's are the ones to get?

It depends on what you like. The Specials are nice guitars if you want P90's, The standards are one of favorites. I prefer humbuckers in these guitars. I bought mine a very long time ago and I STILL love that guitar.

Re: Which Gibson SG's are the ones to get?

The ones from the 70's have the neck pickup right up against the neck, as opposed to the alternative which is about a half inch away from the neck...and that bothers me, a lot.

So an old one is the only SG I would even consider, even then...why not just play a Les Paul like a real man? :cool2:

Re: Which Gibson SG's are the ones to get?

if you do some more research i think you'll find the classic (if you like p90s) is considered a great axe. i've had one since about 2005 and love it. the feel and the sound are top notch. the 61 re-issue feels and plays really well too. but big difference b/w the two. the classic has a thicker neck, the 61 re-issue is pretty thin. the feel of those guitars is very different because of that, and the fact that the 61 re-issue's neck joins the body at a different fret. but everytime i've picked up a 61 RI to mess with it i've fallen very deeply in love (or is it lust??). standards are nice too. you'll have to play a bunch first. have fun!

ps- there has been a few times where i've considered swapping my les paul studio for an SG standard.

I guess Tony Iommi, Angus Young, Frank Zappa, Robby Krieger, Jerry Garcia, Derek Trucks, Frank Marino, Eric Clapton, Peter Townsend, Jimi Hendrix (in the studio), and the wonderful pair from Judas Priest, Glen and KK are all not men.

It's settled.

Yeah, the SG classic gets a lot of praise, I've played one once for 5 minutes and it wasn't set up very well but it sounded really good. The Std.s are good as well but they need mag swaps or new pickups. The 61 reissue is also a killer axe but they cost more money.

I don't know that I agree with that. Norlin made some crap stuff, but 3 of my Gibsons (2 SGs and 1 LPC) are from the Norlin period and I like them very much. They play well, they sound killer, so I don't know that dismissing ALL Norlin era guitars as turds is accurate.

Re: Which Gibson SG's are the ones to get?

the SG is such a simple yet elegant guitar that it's best to ignore the different model designations and just play a bunch of 'em

the differences generally only come down to the pickups used, the shape of the neck, and whether or not the neck is bound.

Re: Which Gibson SG's are the ones to get?

My fave the Custom Shop Historic '62 VOS (without the Maestro Vibrola) cause I really love the vintage feel; or the '61 Reissue.

Norlin era: some good, some not. Depends on the guitar. I had a Norlin-era LP Special and it was good, but it did have some neck problems.

Don't like the current Standard--yep, needs new pickups; and I personally prefer the '60 Slim Taper neck.

Not a big fan of the three-pickup SG Custom models, but I love the Pelham Blue two-pickup Elliot Easton model. What a gorgeous guitar!

The SG Supremes are also gorgeous, but feature maple caps and 24-fret necks.

Re: Which Gibson SG's are the ones to get?

I'd start with the SG standard. Just a great aguitar and the 490R & 498T pickups sound great in this guitar IMO. From there, most SG's just vary in cosmetics.

Re: Which Gibson SG's are the ones to get?

Out of the current production, the 61' re-issues are my favorite. The Classic is great, too.

White ones are the shizz.

60s Juniors are usually decently priced for vintage guitars of the time (if you can live with a single pup). Long neck tenon + single P90 = screamer.
