Which guitar should I get?

Hey friendos,
I'm trying to decide between a limited edition flying v custom from sweetwater and a PRS SE Standard. I can't decide which. I have a thing for v's and explorers, however, I feel as though the PRS would be better suited to more types of music (Metal, Blues, Jazz etc.)
I plan on swapping the pickups with either of them, just because that's the kind of guy I am.
So what do folks at the duncan forum think?
Thanks

Re: Which guitar should I get?

Even if they had the same strings, pickups, string height etc, they would both sound slightly different due to the scale length.

For variety of music, I'd go with the PRS. For straight rock/ metal, then the V. This is also purely based on shape because swapping out pickups will let you play whatever you want with both guitars.

Re: Which guitar should I get?

The PRS has push pull right? You'll get 6 sounds out of it vs the 3 sounds from the V. It'll be more versatile but that highly depends on how often and likely you'll use the push pull splits.

Other than that if you're swapping pickups anyways they'll be rather similar in the full humbucker positions. The V will sound very slightly warmer with it's slightly shorter scale length, that's about it.

Personally I don't use the splits very much so I'd go with the V for its cool looks. If you get a chance to play both though just get the better playing and quality one.

Re: Which guitar should I get?

I'd take the PRS under just about any circumstance, any genre. The new 2017 SE line is beastly, and I'd take it over most guitars into the 1k range.

And then try some Suhr pickups in them. I'm not joking you, it's an amazing match, especially the SSH+/SSH or just straight Thornbuckers for lower gain stuff.

Don't forget the Suhr Aldrich, easily my favorite pickup from Suhr. It's their highest output pickup but it's extremely versatile and cleans up and splits very nicely. It's similar to the SSH+ but with added harmonics and a sweeter treble response in my opinion.

Re: Which guitar should I get?

I checked out the V custom and was quite excited by it at first.. Then I saw it had a bolt on neck.. Bummer.. Been wanting a v for a long time, and it was closed to perfect except being bolt on.. not crazy about the front pickup ring either, but coulda overlooked that

Re: Which guitar should I get?

I dont care what anybody here says, always buy for the aesthetics. If you dont have a gravitational pull to a guitar when looking at it, dont buy it. Only you can make a guitar sound good no matter what style or brand it is. But whatever style makes you want to pick it up everytime you look at it

Re: Which guitar should I get?

Is it the bound Epiphone V? It looks good! Have you ever owned a V? I'm asking because frankly, if you mostly play sitting down, the V sucks. Classical position or whatever, it's the least sit-down-in-front-of-your-computer-and-play-around shape out there (of the conventional shapes, that is). You can't even use a regular chair or you have to sit way out front because otherwise the lower bout will hit the chair.

Disagree strongly. I play in the classical position if I sit down and it works perfectly for me (not that I've owned a V ever, but I've played a few).

I own a V styled guitar since 20 years and have to agree with what you say. Looks cool but sitting down is a pain. You have to pull your self upfront as you say to avoid hitting the lower bout. Resting the lower boutique on the chair ext puts it in a very uncomfortable position.
Not something I feel like playing after a long day at work.
OP I would go with the PRS but that would be because I have a V.

What would you say to Aldrich humbuckers in an SE? A buddy of mine suggested them when I had mine and I was tempted to buy some. I may be getting another SE soon (a 245 this time) and will probably be upgrading the pickups. The thing with the Aldrich HB is, I've read that it tends to have a softer treble. In my mind I always imagined that to mean it might get muddy in certain guitars.

Depends on your amp settings but I never found the Aldrich to be muddy at all. It's got a softer treble compared to the SSH+ but I actually find the SSH+ to be really fizzy under gain with a searing quality that I think is a bit too much for me. The Aldrich has much sweeter treble response but it still retains very good clarity even under high gain. You can try strumming a chord and you'll still hear all the notes in it. It's easily my favorite Suhr pickup

Re: Which guitar should I get?

I'd take a PRS over any guitar if I had the choice. It does it all, the looks the comfort, the tone (after a pickup swap, stock pickups are horrible on SE's).

I agree about the pickup ring, but bolts don't bother me. Not a real big fan of the color scheme on that one, though. But I'm more of a Korina fan. Do love me some block inlay.

If it's a PRS, it's gotta be one with the half moon dots. Can't stand those damn birds.

I agree, with the exception of the fact that ultimately it also has to be playable. The looks have to make you want to pick it up, but the feel has to make you want to keep it in your hands and not put it down soon.

90% of the guitars I've ever bought, I didn't even plug them in first. It's how it feels in your hands that either speaks to you or it doesn't.

Then you come here and start the process of hammering it into something you like the sound of.
