Which is brighter. '59B or AII Pro B?

The resonant peak on the AII Pro is higher, do you guys think it's brighter than a 59? I use the AII bridge, but wondered if the '59 was brighter.

59's brighter with a slightly scooped midrange compared to the A2Pro, to my ears. It's got that A5 glassiness to the high end that makes it bite harder than it's A2 cousins.

I can't compare the two, but I've tried a Jazz neck, '59 neck, and the alnico ii pro single coils. I would assume (since I haven't actually owned the APH yet ... it's in the mail, but it was supposedly modeled to sound similar to the single coil version, based on the description on the SD website) that the A2PH might sound brighter, but alnico ii magnets aren't going to sound shrill in the highs. The '59 is warm, but it can have some sharp highs on it sometimes.

Resonant peak isn't the only part of the equation. The magnet determines the character of some of the frequencies. If you look, for example, at the Alnico II Pro Flat versus the Vintage Flat, they seem almost identical except for magnet, but if you look at the EQ (this is on the tone comparison chart), which is a representation of perceived highs/mids/lows, the vintage flat has much more treble, but less mids, than the a2ps.

Re: Which is brighter. '59B or AII Pro B?

I only have a 59n and a APH2b, but it's pretty clear that it's more complicated than "who is brighter". The 59 in particular reacts highly to play style, and not in a good way in my play style.

I also don't see that the 59 is scooped as in it has more bass and treble. Treble, OK, but the bass might be tight and kicking but it is pretty quiet. For clean sounds with picking, if you don't select the right kind of speaker cabinet you are bottomless.

between the APH and '59... which has more "growl" or dirtiness for lack of a better term?

cheers

On light play, the APH. Once you hit it harder the '59.

I'm not making this up, I have both. In fact the '59 gets on my nerves with it's behavior under load.

would you want that kind of behaviour when hitting it harder?

or are you finding it too non-linear?

cheers

Right. It does the right thing, but waaaaay too much of it.

It was worse in my Ash Strat alike, better in my LP alike, but even then I can't make friends.

I want a pickup that's fuller on light play, in particular for picking. The most annoying feature of the '59 is, IMHO, that the bass is loud but not full when picking with most amps and cabinets. It sounds nice when I select a 4x10" on my tonelab but there are too many pickups that also sound nice but don't put you through the trouble.

I am still searching for a nice neck pickup. The original APH is too dark and "stealthy", but I now put a weak A5 from an ancient Jeff Beck into my APH bridge and use that in the neck. That's more like it.
