Which middle pickup for YJM Fury Bridge and Neck

I am sourcing parts for a strat-build and the middle pickup is the only thing left to chose.

Here is the recipe:

Body: alder (MJT)
Neck: roasted maple with rosewood fretboard
Nut: bone
Gotoh 510 bridge with steel block
Gotoh 510 tuners
Neck pu: YJM Fury
Bridge: YJM Fury

I will mainly use either the bridge or the neck pickup on this guitar, but I'd like to fill the hole inte middle with something sensible but less expensive than a YJM Fury, because I will rarely us the middle position or the in-betweens. (For those kind of sound I have an old strat)

I am not tying to copy Yngwies sound. The YJM Furys just seemed to be a good choice for heavier overdriven sounds.

Any ideas?

I would think something like a Fender Fat 50 or a SD SSL-1.

None,3-pos switch...

Ha, ha... I was actually considering that, but IMO the two pickup Blackmore strat is one of the ugliest ever made. But sound wise it make sense to not have any useless positions which one never uses. But hopefully I will find some use with the middle pickup.

I guess any noiseless pup with vintage low output.

Why not another YJM?

FWIW.I usually just stick "something" in teh mid pos just to fill up the hole...

I have actually been thinking along those lines. Something "vintagey" in combination with the Furys.

I really love the Fat 50s as a set with what that middle position does to the N&M–was very intrigued by the Furys (hoping to try them out soon) and think those would pair well together especially if you are just looking for a pickup to mainly fill in and be used once in a while.

I totally agree with you on this one...Teles can pull it off but not Strats (unless its a Humbucker in the bridge, but even then I think an HS looks better without a pickguard...but I digress.)

If I'm reading this correctly it has to do with price:

Oops,Duh...

Well,if you're gonna go there, you might as well be there.
Mebbe find a used YJM mid.

Mornin' Trey!!!

Ha! Morning dude!

Might be hard to find a used YJM right now BUT you never know what will pop up online!

I'm dying to try teh Furys, but prolly have to go with the Flat poles, which is some kinda mark-up(Floor Shop Custom,or something)...

From my understanding, the Furys are a little louder & have more highs than the DiMs...

Will be a while,tho...

I only use 9.5" Radius for my electrics, so the regular ones are perfect for me ;)

Hopin' the guy who got the Flats would chime in,but username evades me.

I "think" he was having some kinda issue w/the Stags, even with a non-vintage radius...

Another Fury, or kieep it noiseless with a Classic Strat Stack. Or do a dummy pickup, and don't put anything in there. BTW, I love the Blackmore Strat. The older version is cooler than the newer one.

I had one of the MIJ '97 Blackmores,Flat SD 1/4 lbers @ nk & br,dummy in teh middle.
Sounded fine w/o the mid, just not a Basswood kinda guy...

The reason for not getting a third YJM is to keep the build cost down a bit, since I don't expect to use the middle position or the in-between sounds on this guitar. I have an old strat for all the traditional strat sounds.

This point with this build is really to fulfill and old teenage dream of having a really fast strat which can cope with heavier over driven sounds, hence the choice of the bridge and neck YJMs.

But I need to fill the middle hole with something. I actually found an unknown but good looking strat pickup in the basement. It's probably som rubbish Asian pickup and it will do just fine as a dummy in the middle position. However I would prefer to have a lower cost US pickup there, because it might become useful and it always nice to use good components.

So perhaps a SSL-1 or an FS-1 or something else which isn't too expensive. But it's not just to save money. I just have this feeling that a YJM in this position would be useless for me and that I would rather have something different, which at least might be useful...

Anyway, thanks for all the input.

Just another thought, you can usually pick up MIA Pickups dirt cheap on CL, eBay or Reverb–I used them to make my MIMs sound better.

Cool!

Dunno if you'd need a RWRP or not,not really sure how to rig it for noise-cancelling if that's the plan.

Looking forward to pics/progress,sounds like fun!!!

RWRP probably won't make any difference, because the YJMs are hum cancelling. For some reason I don't have any hum issues with my single coil guitars and the least expensive "good" pickups are real single coils anyway, so that's what I am aiming for.

But we will see. I will report back when it's built. Warmoth needs a couple for weeks to build my neck and I haven't sourced all the parts yet. But I expect to have everything here in time for the neck delivery.

Here is a picture of the MJT body:
