Which neck hb retains the most gain?

I have an APH-1n in my Epi LP, looking for something with more hair to pair up with a C5.
Looking at a Jazz.

Thx.

Re: Which neck hb retains the most gain?

Wait do you mean which neck hb retains the most clarity with gain? Or do you want a high gain neck pickup? The DD neck could balance with a C5 in the bridge I think. Otherwise the Jazz is my favorite neck hb.

Re: Which neck hb retains the most gain?

The JazzN doesn't have any 'hair.' It's a bright, clear PU. What exactly are you looking for?

Re: Which neck hb retains the most gain?

You might think he's looking for something which "retains"

But based on his question, taken in light of the context of his post, I'd venture to guess he wants something which "retains" a "higher output level than typical PAF neck pickups like the A2P and the jazz"

In this context I suspect "retains" means "has comparable output to my bridge pickup"

So, that being said my suggestion is either a duncan distortion neck, or to raise your neck pickup closer to the strings. I mean, if you're looking for a hot/tight neck pickup, the duncan distortion or the screamin demon, lowered slightly, will do what you want I think. I dunno though. I choose my pickups based on whether or not it's rained on more even days that month than odd days so you're on your own.

Which neck hb retains the most gain?

INVADER ???

Do not really understand the question.

Re: Which neck hb retains the most gain?

The Pearly Gates neck has "hair", sizzle.

It hasn't in any of my LP's. Been very smooth and mellow. I think brighter woods might bring out any 'hair and sizzle' better.

For the OP wants, and not that any us can be sure, I'd say a Screamin' Demon might be the sound he's after.

Re: Which neck hb retains the most gain?

Blueman, I am surprised that you have not suggested a magnet swap.

The OP's "unsatisfactory" A2 pickup could be enlivened with an UOA5, made more interesting with an A4 or made loud (but horrid) with an A8 or a ceramic.

As it is, I'm already considering to be in league with the devil by some, because of my suggestions on magnet swapping. I have to be careful not to rile them. It's not unlike the witch scene in The Holy Grail, and as a matter of fact, a forum member has accused me of turning him into a newt.

It wasn't a newt, it was a lizard...

He got better though!

Quite frankly op, I find any PAF type neck pickup to have enough sustain to keep up with a hot bridge. Maybe raising the pickup as has been suggested, and the screws too for more cut.
The jazz is actually the same pickup as the A2pro anyhow (just with a different magnet grade), so it would be somewhat ironic to tear one out and replace with essentially the same thing.

Re: Which neck hb retains the most gain?

jazz/59 hybrid is the best neck pickup ive ever played. itll go with anything
