I voted for neck through. Thing is, bolt on or set neck can both go either way. It's just a matter of craftmenship... I'm not sure if you can say one is better than the other.

Re: Which neck joint do you prefer?

Same here- Bolt On necks feel WAY better to my hands. Maybe I'm just used to em' I guess. I cannot stand neck thru or set necks for some reason. Maybe it's because the vast majority of those have glossy painted neck backs and neck binding. I feel that these slow the hand down and in general are not condusive to shredding.

I voted Set Neck because I've been playing Les Pauls forever now, I would see, however, how everyone would typically like a Bolt On more. Easier access to upper frets is one of the main issues some have w/ Set Necks. Neck Throughs are nice as well, I've just never owned one.

Re: Which neck joint do you prefer?

I like the neckthroughs because it is easier to get to the upper frets since the body doesn't have to give a pace for it be glued or bolted.

Re: Which neck joint do you prefer?

As far as sustain goes, I think you'd be better off with neck through or deep set neck tenon guitars. I use both bolt-ons and set necks, and I like them both. The most important thing is to make sure the neck fits nicely in the pocket. Both my Peavey and my Hamer are designed very well in that regard, and they both sustain quite well. Hamer's set neck design uses a dovetail joint that is 40% bigger than the one Gibson uses, and Hamer fits the neck joint by hand. Rather than allowing a large margin of error like Gibson does, Hamer builds the neck heel so that it's slightly larger than the pocket. A builder then sands it down by hand a little bit at a time, until it's a perfect fit. Because they build entirely by hand, I think Hamer's design is far superior to that of a typical set neck guitar.

What if the neck was maple, unfinished / satin / tung oil, and the joint was a set neck?
I guess that'd be kewl, but why go thru all the hassel? Just give me a bolt on to begin with!

Some bolt on designs (ESP, Ibanez, Washburn) have great upper fret acess- I don't even notice any body wood getting in the way of things!

It makes no difference to me as long as the union is solid. Bolt on necks that have a tendency to move around drives me nuts.

Bolt on, 'cause you can swap necks, although i saw this through-neck soloist the other day, looks like nice top fret access...

ok, never mind, but it looked slick...

You should see my 76 strat. It has a yellow dunlop tortex shoved in the bootom side of the neck pocket to keep it from shifting. I know a previous owner, and he said 'don't remove the pick, that's the tone'...

I like bolt ons and set necks depending on the guitar.

I don't get along with most neck thrus, because most of them are maple, and that generally adds too much maple brightness and upper mid hardness to the guitar's tone. To top it off, a lot of maple neck thrus have maple tops as well. A certain amount of maple is good for articulation, and I love all-maple fender necks, but too much just makes for midrange nastiness you just can't dial out.

Mahogany neck thrus like firebirds are great, though.

I like all three. It depends on the guitar and the perpose it's built for.

Re: Which neck joint do you prefer?

set necks have good sustain, and vibration they feel really soild i like the look of them nice and smooth and no harsh edges ad the neck joint.

Bolt ons are real easy to play on but often i pickup a bolt on and it feels kinda cheap or somting i dont like the metal plate on the back of the ones that hold the neck together but thats just me. A good bolt on i think has a real nice neck which is real fast and none of those metal plates on the back i picked up one once and it had the macdaddy sustain.

Never played a neck thru so cant say.
