Which of these, or any pedal, would you recommend to a begginer?

Yeah, I was wondering what you guys would recommend for a pedal for a beginner(me).

I'm honestly not sure what to say except I (would) like to play rock. Zeppelin, Bon jovi, BOC, Van Halen etc etc.

I have a Roland cube 30, which I love, but I can't get a nice tone for this out of it for some reason.. The distortion goes from virtually nothing, to screaming. I'm not sure exactly why..

That and I'm "planning" on getting a Peavey bandit and giving my cube to my sister.

I'm trying to spend to spend as little as possible, but I don't want to get trash.

One question, does not much happen to pedals? Buying used is a good idea?

If it is, I'm hoping to buy them from my local guitar shop, so if someone recommends one I'll see if they have it on Monday.

They actually let me bring the pedals(New and used) home and try them out for a few days with my guitar and amp and have a great layaway so I try to buy from them even if they're a little overpriced.

So far, I have a T.Rex Tonebug Overdrive(Used; 45$), Danelectro Fab tone(Used 50$) and a Texas screamer; Johnny Winter(New 110$) that I'm trying.

I said I wanted the cheapest I could get but the owner just said for me to try the Texas Screamer to hear what a quality pedal sounds like.

I absolutely love the Texas screamer and the T.Rex. I like the Fab tone, but I'm just not if as much.

I'd just like some opinions, it doesn't have to be one of the three as they have alot more but if anyone has something to say about one of the three I have, please do.

Also, I know I'm still just a beginner, this is mostly a goal to set. After I actually find one I love, I plan on putting it on layaway and paying it slowly so I'm not expecting to actually get it for probably a few months. That's also why it can be a mildly more expensive one. I also kinda feel bad taking all of these home and testing them and not putting any on layaway in the next little while.

Thanks@

the digitech bad monkey is a bargain, so is the Nobels ODR-S. And the Nobels odr-1.
Depending on the flavour you want.

MI Audio Cruch Box is a great sounding pedal ... probably under $100 used.

Re: Which of these, or any pedal, would you recommend to a begginer?

They got the Super Crunch box too. Either will should have plenty of gain going into a clean channel for the stuff you mentioned. Basically a Marshall in a box from the way it sounds. They make good stuff. If you were after super high gain modern stuff I would say get the MI Audio Megalith Delta, but the crunch box should be great for what you want to play.

I would spend some more time messing with the Cube's settings. I have a Cube 60 and I can get all sorts of really good tones out of it. I could probably gig with it and a Tubescreamer type OD pedal and be happy, but even dry I can get some really nice tones out of it.

What setting are you using for the second channel on it? The Black Panel and the Tweed both sound really good by themselves, or with an OD of some sort. I don't play much heavy stuff, but the tones I have gotten out of the Classic and Metal stacks have been quite good. I'd just spend some time really focusing on the amp settings before going crazy with pedals

As far as pedals go, I really like the EHX Soul Food with my Cube.

I've recently tried most of the different combos I can find online, and what sounds right to me but nothing quite gets the tone..

I will mess around with it more tomorrow though!

Some sort of tubescreamer. Use your own judgment as far as how it sounds.

Why not a DS-1? It's Patient Zero in distortion pedals, it will do at least one interesting thing with most amps, and it will tell you precisely how much you suck or do not suck.

Thats what I was thinking
I have a DS1 they can be forund on GC used for $20 all day every day

I think Joyo has some interesting beginner pedals almost all can be had New for $30 on Amazon

I too have a Cube 30
you aint got something set right if it doesnt sound good

set the bass @ 7
Set the mid @ 5
set the treble @ 4

select tweed
Gain @ 7
turn the EFX off
add some reverb, not alot

tune your guitar

strum and A minor chord

C major
G major
A minor
D major

slowy

JC clean is the default for one channel
switching over to the other more "embellished" channels is where the tone is

Thanks, I'll try it out in a few!

I'll start looking for a DS-1 for when either me or my sister gets a new amp.(Even with the cube 30, it's not very fun to haul into the other side of the house 3+ times a day) They had a DS-1 or of the sort in last week for 19.99 but I wasn't thinking about it..

Re: Which of these, or any pedal, would you recommend to a begginer?

Getting back to the Roland Cube 30 for a moment. Your gripe about the lack of any subtle crunch variation between the squeaky clean JC channel and the full-on overdriven channel will be equally true of a Peavey Bandit. Hence, there is no tremendous advantage to this purchase.

Adding an overdrive to the JC channel of the Cube would make sense. Ideally, something with three-band tone controls and plenty of dynamic sensitivity.

Since Led Zeppelin has been name-checked, I suggest a pre-owned Catalinbread R.A.H. pedal. Their 5F6 is another tasty unit. You just need the right approach to get the best out of it.

About the Peavey Bandit/Cube 30, I just chose the Bandit from recommendation, if there is a better amp under or around 150$ please do say. :D

That's what I'm trying to say. The T.Rex and the Texas screamer(Out of my price range) sound amazing through the JC clean channel on my cube. And as for the price, we give the owner farm fresh eggs weekly and buy enough stuff from there, he's willing to knock some off the price.

I'll write them down too. ;)

Which Bandit do you have? The one I have has plenty of tonal options, it does everything from perfectly bland clean to all out death metal, with plenty in between.

The opening posts states, "thinking of getting".

There have been numerous revisions of the Peavey Bandit - some better sounding than others. My point was that the Bandit is going to suffer in exactly the same respects as the Cube, only louder. The money would be better spent on a pedal.

What I'm trying to say is that no matter what, we have to get a new amp and I was recommended the Bandit. Either I get a new amp and my cube goes to my sister, or she just gets herself something decent.

Re: Which of these, or any pedal, would you recommend to a begginer?

Try the Brit Combo mode, dial the gain back and increment carefully.
Hard not to get a gently driven sound out of it for Zeppelin and whatnot, unless your guitar has some crazy hot pickups.

Totally disagree. The Bandit is going to be analog solid state, where the Roland is digital. There's going to be a tonal difference, as well as whether or not the Cube will take pedals well, and the Bandit will have an effects loop...

Would these settings for the 20x still mostly apply for the 30?(Or even be accurate for the 20x?) Some of the controls are different but relatively similar. http://www.roland.com.cn/assets/media/pdf/cube-20xl_amp_settings.pdf

As for pickups, actually I'm using an SH-2N Jazz model + SH-4 JB.

Re: Which of these, or any pedal, would you recommend to a begginer?

settings should cross from one to the other
for the most part
