Which one of you guys had a THD hotplate AND a Legacy?

I have tried Hot Plates with several amps and they generally work better with amps that are non-master volume designs. Your Legacy has a master. Tried it with a Fender Vibro-verb and an AC-30 and was not thrilled, seemed like a wet blanket had been placed over the speakers. I would try the 1/2 power setting and perhaps a pair of THD Yellow Jackets.

Several folks have mentioned the Marshall Power Brake work the best for Marshall amps. Perhaps the Legacy might be an amp that works well with the Power Brake???
