Which one shreds better?

I'm replacing the neck pickup in my JEM :scared:. And my two choices i have are an Air Norton and a PAF Joe. What i want to know is which one's gunna give me a better sound for shred and solo-oriented playing in general. I'd like to be able to crank the gain and have it still be clear and precise. thanks

Re: Which one shreds better?

I prefer the PAF Joe (somewhat close to the Jazz neck), but many prefer the Air Norton, it just depends on your tastes.

The Air Norton has more mid range and less high end, the PAF Joe has a very sweet high end with warm, clear lows and low mids.

Air Norton - listen to John Petrucci of Dream Theater! It's a very popular neck pup for shred.

They would both be good matches though. Air Norton is more modern sounding, PAF Joe is a bit more vintage sounding. Check out youtube and DMZ's site for some clips to see what you prefer.

It depends on the individual guitar, but I's almost think that a SD '59 would work very well. It's not a high output pup, but it's clean and you'll have it in the neck position, so it should sound nice & warm.

Re: Which one shreds better?

i aready have a 59 in the neck of my kramer. i love it, but not for shred stuff. it's way too warm, and just doesnt have that upper-midrange push that i'm looking for. also the highs are a bit too fat for shred. though it is a great pickup.

I vote Air Norton. I have on ein the neck of my RG750VP and it has amzing fluidity and enough push to sound like something...
