Which Pickup question: under cover

Question for the learned ones!

What is a good pickup choice if I want to run the pup UNDER the pickguard cover? This means about a 1/2" distance to the strings with a 1/8" of plastic and wood veneer.

The effect is to look like there are no pups. I would hope to use HB's with 500K dual pot and a blender pot so there would be only two knobs showing.

Any ideas?

Re: Which Pickup question: under cover

try getting a dimarzio X2N i've seen a guy use it on a tamburine and suprisingly the cleans were amazing

I should also mention that I am after a smooove sound with a touch of edge at full throttle. I am still trying to figure out what the frets past the 5th one are for!

It is a journey.

I htink you´d want something pretty hot (so you still have enough output) and pretty bright (because the increased distance also makes the tone warmer)...

A distortion might work out well at the bridge, depending on how much of the "modern touch" you want. I´m not really sure what I´d try at the neck, a Fullshred maybe.....but if you´re looking for a more vintage tone,...oh boy...

This sounds like something that would make a cool custom shop pickup, you may want to give MJ a call... ;)

I have no idea as what could be useful here. But if you find something you are satisfied with, please keep us informed, okay?

MJ is the lady that pretty much IS the Duncan Custom Shop! As far as putting pikups underguardplates...there are several custom guitar builders that are mounting Telecaster neck pickups under the guardplate so that it will look like an esquire, I have not tried one of these yet, but I have heard that it works pretty well...good luck

Re: Which Pickup question: under cover

nick the guts out of a variax, mount them in there :D

Sometimes I wonder if we don't all share a collective mentality here on this board. I was just thinking this exact same thing earlier today when someone was talking about building an Esquire. I think that would look so clean. A neck pup mounted under the pickguard of a Tele.

Weird . . . cool. :laugh2:

Re: Which Pickup question: under cover

If I could just find a way to hide the strings as well!

Actually, the Black Diamonds do that all ready. This may call for some weird science!

Re: Which Pickup question: under cover

I'd suggest trying a pickup with a rare earth magnet. You'll need something pretty strong.
