which pickups ASH BODY + MAPLE NECK/EBONY FRETBOARD

hi all,

im assembling a strat ASH body/Maple top + Maple neck/Ebony Fretboard guitar. H-S-S configuration.

seeing as that body/neck/fret combo is gonna be fairly bright...i have sold my spare JB and ordering a Custom Custom Humbucker.this should hopefully tame it.

this leaves the neck and single coil pickups.

im after the most fendery glassy/bell/crystal clean/blues (slightly overdriven) tones
the bridge is where all the distortion playing will be.

which SD Single coils should i be looking at that will pair up well with the custom custom.

im considering the SSL1 vintage staggered...but was wondering ...do you have to buy covers for these pickups as the pics show exposed wires wound around???

thanks in advance

Re: which pickups ASH BODY + MAPLE NECK/EBONY FRETBOARD

SSL1's need covers, they are a good choice, I have one in my Sa series Ibanez.

Re: which pickups ASH BODY + MAPLE NECK/EBONY FRETBOARD

All the SSL-1s I've had have had the black fabric tape around them, and I've used them uncovered.

Re: which pickups ASH BODY + MAPLE NECK/EBONY FRETBOARD

considering your choice of wood, i suggest the aps-1 alnico 2 pro. they are not as glassy as the ssl-1, but they will balance well with the cc and your guitar since they have more mids and rounder highs.

The strat with the natural finish has an ash body, maple neck, and ebony fret board. This guitar is bright and has that classic strat tone. It has Antiquity Texas Hots in the middle / neck and a Custom Bridge with 250K pots. The tone controls are wired to the neck and bridge with a 0.022f cap on the neck pot and a 0.047f cap on the bridge pot. I definitely recommend Antiquitys. They are slightly overwound and will give you that bluesy tone you are looking for.

Re: which pickups ASH BODY + MAPLE NECK/EBONY FRETBOARD

so out of the SSL1, APS1 Alnico 2 pro and Antiquity Texas Hot ...which one will get me close to SRV "lenny" Hendrix "little wing" tone??

should i get 2 of hte same pups for neck and middle or 1 of each (ie ssl1 neck aps1 middle etc...)

im a bit worried that my guitar will have too much highs and no mids with the SSL1 and APS1 after reading the SD tone charts coz i know ash body is bright with scooped mids already...maybe the thin maple top will make a diffrence??

...ill have to look into the Antiquity Texas Hot (are these seymour duncans?)

Re: which pickups ASH BODY + MAPLE NECK/EBONY FRETBOARD

your choice of wood are all associated with highs. swamp ash + maple + ebony is bright city and yes your guitar will have too much highs.

Dammit...the amp im using is a Framus Cobra+Dragon Cab...i have the presence and treble already round roughly 9 oclock (+/- 1) on all channels

is there anyways i can tame the highs (ie pots/capicitors)

Re: which pickups ASH BODY + MAPLE NECK/EBONY FRETBOARD

may i ask why your choice of wood?

Re: which pickups ASH BODY + MAPLE NECK/EBONY FRETBOARD

i chose the mitey mite ash/maple top for the body wood as all my other guitars are either alder, alder/maple top, mahoghany, basswood and equiped with humbuckers..so i thought i would go for something completely diffrent...and go single coils ...plus it looks awesome

i went for an ebony fretboard as with above ...all other guitars have rosewood or maple ...plus i played a $3000AUS+ fender strat with ebony fret board and loved the way it felt.

Re: which pickups ASH BODY + MAPLE NECK/EBONY FRETBOARD

seems like the choice of wood is fixed. 250k pots on the singles will tame the highs. folks generally prefer .022 tone cap. if that's too bright, try .033 or .047. if you are building a strat, try 250k master tone, 250k volume for singles and 500k for the cc. start with .022 cap and work your way up to taste. once you like the tone on your singles but find the cc too bright, switch to 250k vol pot. i will still suggest the a2p for your choice of wood.

cheers for the advice, muchly appreciated.
yeah i guess i should have researched the wood types a bit more before i clicked "buy it now"

thanks again.

Re: which pickups ASH BODY + MAPLE NECK/EBONY FRETBOARD

so by a2p you mean the APS1 Alnico II pro single coil?
do i have to buy covers for them??

plus is there any diffrence in the APS1 and APS2 (flat)

Maple is not a bright wood, its very focused and tight.:smack: :smack: :smack:

Ash can vary widly in tone from peice to peice,

Ebony can add some spank to the sound.

No, this guitar is not necessarly going to be "bright city"

It looks like to me, with the exception of the Ebony board instead of a maple board, you have old school strat woods there.

may i ask why your choice of wood?

It might just be a good choice bro. I think it is possibly a good idea myself.

maybe my ears are shot. i have a friend who has an esp japanese artist model with a swamp ash body, maple neck and ebony board. that axe was bright as hell!

i love maple necks. they really add articulation and spank. swamp ash is another favorite of mine. i agree that leo got it right with swamp ash body and maple neck. imo, that's the brightest combo i can handle. i love the feel of ebony board but i can't seem to find a place for maple/ebony combo on anything but a mahogany body or to a certain degree, alder.

you have a point on swamp ash varifying from piece to piece. lightweight swamp ash sounds warmer and more resonant and they usually comes with a premium. i don't think mighty mite is gonna use that for their bodies. i won't be surprise they used northern "baseball bat" ash for their bodies. add to that a maple top... and of course they come in hard and soft species, again adding a variable to the tonal equation.

don't get me wrong bro, i am not questioning your knowledge. its just what i gather from experience. of course ymmv. :fingersx:

+1 If you want vintage tone. I played the Lite Ash Strat (triple APS-1 single coils) and it had me drooling over the tone.

Re: which pickups ASH BODY + MAPLE NECK/EBONY FRETBOARD

Read the Suhr website. The denser the wood, the brighter, all else equal. Maple is less dense than rosewood, which is less dense than ebony.

Suhr won't use anything but maple boards on ash guitars unless the customer specifically requests it, anything else is too bright.

Re: which pickups ASH BODY + MAPLE NECK/EBONY FRETBOARD

Just in case this helps, I asked Warmoth about what the MOST balanced (tone-wise) wood they offer, and they said Lite Ash would fit that description pretty well. They charge $40 + ash prices for selecting a lite ash piece, but if the Lite Ash strat and tele are any indication, it's a good guitar you'd get.

But on the lite ash strat, the alnico II pro pickups sound very vintage and cool.

Anyways, I would try looking at what the tone wizard said first.

Re: which pickups ASH BODY + MAPLE NECK/EBONY FRETBOARD

where can i find out what woods mitey mite use for their body...im wont too happy if it is "baseball ash" haha

so are there any diffrences between the APS1 alnico 2 pro and the APS2???

is one staggered and one flat??
what is the diffrence.

sorry for all these quetions...i have no clue bout single coils
