Which pickups to brighten up a dark guitar?

My McNaught came stock with Rio Grande's Texas/BBQ. The guitar sounds thick as hell and IMO these pickups are a bit too warm sounding. Any thoughts on something that's brighten it up a bit, while maintaining a tight bottom end. I play mostly metal/hard rock.

Thanks!

If the guitar is already on the bright side a Jazz in the neck and a C5 in the bridge should be a great set up!

Actually, the guitar is very dark and I want to brighten it up a bit.

Dude...I said that all wrong...if the guitar is already dark then you want to go with the C5 and the Jazz...those pickups are bright and IMO work well in a dark sounding guitar.

Yup..Christian made a good suggestion...

also a Distortion or custom for the bridge...

A Jazz in the neck and a 59 in the bridge would also work well if your amp has enough gain on tap.

I'm with Benjy, a '59 is a nice bright bridge pup.

59 or C-5 bridge, and Jazz neck! The C-5 will still have the heaviness, but it's not as dense as a BBQ.

If you play rock and metal, the C5/Jazz would work fine but my favorite would be the Full Shred set for it! Actually, I do have an extra Full Shred bridge around here I could be talked out of fairly easily.

Thanks guys! I've had a C5, Custom and JB in various other guitars. I found the C5 to be dark for some reason . I really liked the JB though. What about a CC or PG? My amps have more than enough gain on tap...I'd prefer the pup to shape my sound, not color it (if that makes sense).

I've never owned a 59B, but I did have a 59N in my Dean Hardtail. I loved that pup, but it seemed to be a bit dark...

The Pearly gates bridge is very bright, So is the Scremin Demon! For your tastes, I think the full Shred will be good though!

Re: Which pickups to brighten up a dark guitar?

We are in a similar situation as I have a dark PRS McCarty. You could also look at the PRS Artist pickups!

We have similar tastes......although I do play metal, I am more the classic to heavy rock type. I do not like overly compressed pickups either.

Funny thing is....the Duncan site says the CC and Pearly Gates work well in bright guitars! I think you and I would both like the JB in these guitars since they seem similar to the BBQ but with a bit more highs, but retains that versatility and thick richness.

Have you thought of a Custom Custom?

I'd love to try some PRS pups, but I'm not very familiar with them The CC was my first instinct with this guitar. I'm surprised more people haven't reccomended it...

Re: Which pickups to brighten up a dark guitar?

It is funny because Duncan says it works best in bright guitars!

I wonder how the CC compares to the JB and C-5. I hear it can sound thin in some guitars. What about a matching neck bucker?

the CC is a very thick and warm sounding pickup, I used it to fatten up a guitar I have that is already on the bright side. The PG is NOT as brighrt as some people would have you belive, nor is the JB really...a Jazz neck and a Demon might be great for you

Many people feel the C-5 is a fantastic bridge pickup for a dark guitar. I may have to order one.
