I'm about to purchase a fender 1972 re issue mexican made telecaster. The guitar comes with 2 fender "wide range" humbuckers. I want to put a different humbucker in the bridge though, for im pretty sure the provided pickups will suck ass. I've been suggested to go with the seymour duncan pearly gates? Would this work? What would be better? Can anyone help me please? I play in a rock band. looking for a fat crunchy distortion sound. Will be played through a mesa dual rectifier. The Pearly gates will not give you a Fat and Crunchy sound in the bridge. Its bright sounding in my book. Too bright for me. The Custom Custom will do the trick or, if you want REALLY crunchy and FAT go with the invader.

I have pearly gates with my custom tele and sound nice and warm.
Maybe it will be better in the neck! An Invader in the bridge.

A Pearly gates will be a great neck pickup with most all Duncan bridge buckers!

sort of out of topic. normal humbuckers will not fit a pickguard routed for fender's wide-range buckers. the wide-range pickups are bigger than normal buckers. also, you will find four screw-holes on the pickguard per wide-range pickup instead of the usual two for a humbucker. that said, a replacement pickguard is in order.

Leigh, what kind of music do you play? What amp are you using? Effects....or straight in?
Have you heard the new Wide Range style pickups? You might want to give them a fair shot before replacing. I'm familiar with the old ones having owned two original 72's. These were great pickups. Very open, clear and articulate. More single coil in nature than most buckers. I have not heard the re-issues though, so I can't comment on them.
As far as Duncan replacements, I love seths, Alnico ll's, 59 and Jazz. These may or may not do the trick for you depending on the answers to the above questions and what you need a pickup to do. One thing you're going to have to do is order a replacement pickguard cut for regular size buckers. While I'm sure there are many out there to do this, I've had good luck with Warmoth cutting them for me.
