I can't seem to warm up to the sound of Vintage 30's even though a lot of artists I like use those speakers! Am I doing something wrong?

Thought I'd take a poll to see what people like...

Also... I'm planning on getting a Marshall Greenback-loaded cab for my new Mesa/Boogie Rectoverb head, but they only come in 16ohm and my head has outputs for 4 and 8. I've heard that running incorrect ohmage loads can alter the tone and damage the amp. Can I rewire the cab for 8ohm operation?

You didn't mention what sound your going for? But w/t a mesa/recto I'm
guessing your looking for a more contemparay sound? You might wanna
avoid celestion all together. There's a lot of good speaker's out there.
Check weber, tone tubby's Etc. Cabinets can be wired for dirrent impedance
loads,It depends on if it 's wired in series or pararell. Off the top of my head
I think 2 16ohm speakers wired in parrarell will yield 8 ohms??I gotta hit the
books on that one. Check the internet for a diagram on series/parrarell wiring.

BTW, I like JBL speaker's ( but good luck trying to find one!)

Re: Which Speakers are your favorite?

Ive got a vintage 30 ENGL cab and it rocks, and lots of the guitar tones i love are done with vintage 30's, but i heard a clip of vintage 30's compared to all other speaker types (by bob savage) and one of the others were g12h 30's, and they sounded so sweet so they get my vote!

Re: Which Speakers are your favorite?

Hey B2D, even though I haven't heard one yet, if you like the overall tone of the V30, you may want to look into the new Century Vintage. There is a review on HC and it says that it sounds alot like the V30, but not as bright/harsh. Dave has them at Avatar for $119 I think. I may give them a try myself.

Re: Which Speakers are your favorite?

Original G12H30s are my favorite speaker for guitar. I've been wondering how the new reissue sounds as the G12M reissue is close to the original though slightly different.

For me this is a two part answer...For clean tones through fender combo amps...Weber and Jensens...

For my Marshall/Gain/British tones...I Like the V30s and the G12H Celestions...I don't have a favorite because my speaker selections are always amp specific..The Weber stuff is pretty hard to beat though overall.

That's kind of the way I am.

Tho when it comes to 12" speakers Celestions are my faves hands down...even over old Jensens. I have a few '66 Jensen C12NA's I'm saving for something ( I don't know what! ) and those are my faves when it comes to Jensens, but I still like my Celestions more.

I've used Celestions in my Fender amps since the mid 70's...even for clean tones.

As far as 10's go, I think Ted Weber makes the best 10's on the market.

As far as 12's go, I prefer Celestions.

Replacing the stock speaker found in most Fender amps with a good Celestion will usually correct the farty bass of most stock speakers, and improve the loud, clean tone of the amp as much as the overdriven tones you normally think of a Celestion as having.

I like my '66Jensen C12NA's and I've owned the 50's alnico version P12N, as well as Ted's version of the P12N. I think the Celestions I mentioned all sound better than the best Jensens...less farty bass, cleaner cleans and the soloing tone most guitarists hear in thier heads.

Re: Which Speakers are your favorite?

with my little experience i still like the v30 most. But the cab itself is a big factor, too. f/e mesa 4x12 withs V30 sound different then marshall 4x12 with V30s

Re: Which Speakers are your favorite?

If you're getting a 4x12 cab, have you thought about mixing the speakers? I have a 4x12 (2x V30 and 2x G12H30). This combo is pretty nice IMO.

Re: Which Speakers are your favorite?

I just know Steve_R uses Greenbacks, and I think his tone is to die for.:headbang:

I've heard V30s, seemed really bassy to me. My g12h30s are...so-so.

Re: Which Speakers are your favorite?

It's all about the Webers.

Why compromise on just clean or distortion, when a set of speakers can do both wonderfully well? ;)

The Weber Silver Bell and Blue Dog speakers work for everything from chimey Fender, overdriven Vox, rocking Marshall, and all out gain Mesa. Best purchase I could have made.

When I went to go buy the Triamp from a man in NJ, he let me try it out with his speakers and effects. He had a Mesa 4x12 with Celestion Vintage 30s and it just didn't sound all that great. So many people swear by them, so I guess you can just blame it on the fact that I was playing it at lower volumes than usual.

Still, Webers rock :headbang:

Re: Which Speakers are your favorite?

Ted Weber makes all kinds of speakers. You might try calling him - they're great to talk to there and really helpful. Also, there is a forum just for speakers hosted on the Weber VST site: http://www.webervst.com/vstbbs/bbs.html

I am not saying Celestions, etc aren't better for what you want - I've just had good experience with Ted's advice & products.

Re: Which Speakers are your favorite?

I just recently got a weber blue dog and installed it in my fender hot rod deluxe. It is awesome. Best investment I've made.

Re: Which Speakers are your favorite?

i dig the vintage 30's but i am thinkin of doing the bogner X cab thing with some g12t-75's !!!!!!!!!!!!!!1 :laugh2:

Re: Which Speakers are your favorite?

Celestion G12-80s are what I've settled on for my Marshall. My favorite speakers in a Fender are JBLs. I've had the original '59 Jensen P10Rs that came in my Bandmaster reconed after using JBLs for over 25 years, and that's what I'm using in it now. They have an interesting vibe that's really starting to grow on me again, but all around I like it better with JBL K110s. Problem is the top speaker won't fit with JBLs so I have to use an extension cab when I go that way.
