Easy man, you just didn't explain much in your topic.

Re: Which transformers for amplifier

I recently started hearing about Heyboer trannies, Scott Splawn is using them in his amps... how good are they?

I've got Partridge in my Sound City... from what I hear they're pretty good too.

BUT, when I spoke with Jeff Seal about amp building a loooong time ago, Mercury Magnetics was the trannie he recommended.

Oh, and lest we forgot the voodoo surrounding the vintage Drakes!

Re: Which transformers for amplifier

I too really liked the sound of the Heyboer ( prices are great too) I put in my old Plexi RI. It was a nice improvement over the stock Drake that was in there. I know many folks the love the MM, they are not alone as far as quality, current, iron goes. Cerrum from the Plexi Palace forum builds his own plexi vintage spec transformers. Those that have them have raved about the sound they get.

On the old side, I love the Hammonds in my Traynors. FREAKIN HUGE!!. Partridge are legendary and are a huge part of the British Voice. My Carlsbro has the same iron that Plexi era Marshalls used. I paid 275.00 for that amp but could sell the transformers and choke for likely double the price of the amp. ( A guy I know got close to 700.00 for his) Original, working Iron is worth a lot of cash.

There are lots of quality options for builders out there, tis truley a great era for amps right now. All those vintage amps have made for new builders demanding the same quality in new parts, and builders are listening.

Re: Which transformers for amplifier

It really depends on the amp. Mercury's stuff is overpriced IMHO.

Why go easy, what makes you think I am going hard, and add comments if you have a better opinion of another transformer...

"There is no substitute for the best!" is a little unclear... what is that option supposed to mean?

Re: Which transformers for amplifier

How much are Partridge's going for nowadays? As much as the Drake's are, or close?

I cant wait to get maybe a year and a half more of EE classes under my belt so I have a general knowledge of whats going on in a tube amp. A guy from the Netherlands I spoke to said that the Small signal equivalent of a FET and a triode are very similar, and I'll do FET's most likely next semester (this semester is pretty much just analysis techniques). I can;t wait.
