Which tubes?

I've read a lot on here that the stock Mesa tubes aren't the best. I use the 6l6's and would like some opinions on replacements. Mesa dual rec tremoverb btw. Also what is this "Voodoo" mod I've read about? Thanks!

Re: Which tubes?

Sorry, are the smaller tubes the pretubes and the larger ones the rectifier? If facing the back of the amp, is first position right or left?(I'm used to solid state Line 6, but I'm quickly7 learning!)

Re: Which tubes?

Pre-amp tubes are the small ones, power tubes are the large one's. Not sure what the rectifier tube looks like, I've never seen one. If you are facing the back of your amp, the small tube that is FARTHEST away from the power tubes is V1.

Re: Which tubes?

Man I just got a set of Ruby 6L6GC STR's and they are super quiet and holy crap! They have HUGE bass response without the mud. ZERO mud even cranked! And at high gain, the clipping in the distortion is way defined, plus the highs are definitely there but they are in no way piercing. The best part is I got a matched quad from Musicians' Friend for $55.98 and that includes shipping. And I got them in 2 days! I'm pretty happy with them to say the least.

Re: Which tubes?

You can change the pre-amp tubes yourself with no issues. However, leave power tube changes to a trained tech. Most amps need to be re-biased when power tubes are changed, and the voltage inside the amp is lethal unless you know what you're doing.

Re: Which tubes?

Well I think I remember reading that my amp has a no bias, that you just have to put the switch on whether you want 6L6's or EL something... BUT I'm not touching it for now until I learn more. The tubes still work, just wanna see what's out there that might be better. Checked on the voodoo mods. They look cool, but are they worth it?
