What's funny is, it wasn't a really old one... just one that a guy used in a metal band for about 6 years and sweated on it nightly.
I wonder if I can score another one cheap enough that I can attempt to relic it similarly?

yes you can, bobbins are easy to relic as long as you dont overdo it but the poles need to be oxidized,if you leave acidic(orange juice,sweat,soda for examples)moisture on them for a week they will turn and start to oxidize. in 2 weeks or so you will have that same look as your old one.
