Who can tell what a body is made of by looking at it?

Re: Who can tell what a body is made of by looking at it?

No... what the hell? What would be the point of a koa body with a mahogany back? There's no way the top is maple... I think it's just a 2 piece koa body.

yeah, that looks like all koa to me. nice looking guitar also!

Email Schecter with the serial on the back plate.

I actually saw that guitar, since I always search for old US Schecters. Looks nice and oddly, it looks like a Koa cap laminated on more Koa. I think he pasted that description from another similar model. I'm always leery of a guitar like that without seeing it, or confirming it with an authority at Schecter, since they were a parts company back then. My guess is that 48th St Custom sold a lot of Schecter guitars and parts, and this guitar was a special model made for 48th St. It's probably worth about $1000-$1300

Thanks for the input. I had a hunch but needed some confirmation. I am planning on emailing Schecter with the S/N....however their website is a state of flux right now.

Here's the funny part. This seller is also selling an ESP; described as "It has a exquisite Maple neck and body, and is painted in a dark ebony color". Then they list the "features":

Features:
Maple Neck thru Body
Two piece Koa body

There's some confusion going on.

Me too.

Re: Who can tell what a body is made of by looking at it?

thats a tom anderson-era schecter, isnt it? i get a strong anderson vibe from the looks...

Re: Who can tell what a body is made of by looking at it?

So what would the koa body with maple neck sound like?

Re: Who can tell what a body is made of by looking at it?

it should sound good. it would be a little brighter than a mahogony body and a maple neck. just a little.

my experience with koa is very limited though and it has only been in acoutics that i have played. Taylor made some really nice, all koa and koa topped guitars.

+1
I think it has no top at all. if you compare the front and back picture (1st and last in left row) you can see, that the shapes/lines are identical. they are stronger on the top but equal. The back picture shows only one split in the middle so I'd say two pieces of wood. if it's koa or something else I don't know...

but the neck shurely looks nice.
I wonder if it has push-pull potis installed to split the pups...

+2, and whats up with selling a shecter guitar in an esp case?

Re: Who can tell what a body is made of by looking at it?

Schecter is actually owned by ESP. They are 2 completely different makers and try to keep as little relation as possible, but its true. This guy probably worked for Schecter or ESP back in the day (or now) and he is trying to sell his stuff. Makes sense to me!

EDIT: I looked at his other stuff up for aution and he has a lot of antique stuff up there, maybe an older family member recently died and he is selling the stuff. in that case it would make sense that he does not know what it is made of.
