Who else here favors single channel amps?

It's simple and pure. All the tone you'd need. It forces you to be more creative with your playing and guitar controls.

I just wanna see who else favors/likes 'em.

Me. Hi & Low inputs, Volume & Gain, Bass, Mid & Treb, is what I tend to favor in an amp.

Re: Who else here favors single channel amps?

I've gone thought a guitar shop worth of gear trying to find an amp with a dirty sound like my Marshall 2555 and a decent clean channel. After many years and far too many $$$ spent, I've gone back to using the 2555 and my guitar's volume knob. I know the amp isn't truly one channel, but the "clean" channel is pretty useless.

Re: Who else here favors single channel amps?

I have yet to find a channel switcher that really trips my trigger.

Re: Who else here favors single channel amps?

I don't really use a super sparkly clean tone, so I like the dirty sounding amp, pedals for more distortion, and the volume knob to clean up thing.

Re: Who else here favors single channel amps?

Volume and tone...maybe a bright channel or input. Might as well get one great tone instead of three mediocre ones...although I don't need to play Toto, the Eagles, and Slipknot in the same set.

Re: Who else here favors single channel amps?

Hmmm..... guess my 6G6-A is a single - well, you can't switch anyway, and I only ever use the modded Bass channel. Volume, Treble, Bass and the Presence knob (oh man, the Presence knob). Most pedals have gone away too. Tone to the bone. Let your fingers do the work.

And ES350 - you made me blow Dandelion and Burdock out of my nose **** you, with that comment "I don't need to play Toto, the Eagles, and Slipknot in the same set", man, I was trying to picture the gig..... too funny.

Re: Who else here favors single channel amps?

Most of my amps have 2 channel's but none of them are channel switchers...Twin Reverb, Sound City 50+, Fender Deluxe, Mission Super, Ampeg Jet...only the Jet is a true single channel but none of them are shannel switching. FWIW, 3 of them, the 3 that see the most play time are inputs and a volume and single tone control...I love simple amps...they're often quite punchy and have a little extra something more complex amps don't have!

Re: Who else here favors single channel amps?

you know now that i think about it, my first amp was a single channel amp with no frills...it forced me to really develop my chops until i basically could not get the tones i wanted out of it and when i switched to my Univox, man it was like i discovered a whole new level of tone. now though it seems i spent too much time tinkering with knobs than just playing...there is much to be said for simplicity (says the guy with 10 pedals, lol)

Re: Who else here favors single channel amps?

I can't get on with them at a live gig. Too many sounds to cover. As a matter of fact, I'm planning on getting a higher gain head and using that through a sealed cabinet in conjunction with my open back Rivera. That should give me at least 3 distinct tones that I do need. Maybe it's not Eagles>Toto>Slipknot, but it's something along those lines. At the end of the day, I'll have two amps, an A/B box, a good compressor, my Boss Hyper Fuzz, a wha, and some kind of delay.

Re: Who else here favors single channel amps?

I've used both, and I don't have a big preference either way, but, if I am using a switcher, I don't do channel switching in a song. I'll work from my gtr. I may use one channel or the other for a given song, if I have the option, but, even then, the channels won't be radically different.

In other words, I can easily live w/o a channel switching amp.

Re: Who else here favors single channel amps?

yes. What I really prefer is A/Bing 5 amps. all single channels ;) no need for the swiss army knife.

Re: Who else here favors single channel amps?

If you take a look at my main gigging amps... I'm a single channel guy.
Princeton Reverb Clone
Marshall 2204 Clone
Fender HRD (stays in the clean channel 98% of the time)

Re: Who else here favors single channel amps?

Single channel 18-watter clone here. Volume and tone, with an attenuator around back. I set it crunchy. If I need clean, I back off the guitar volume. If I need more, I use a BB Preamp.

Re: Who else here favors single channel amps?

Single channel/nonchannel switchers + pedals = where its at!

Absolutely, that is where its at, this set up gives you one of a kind of both - responsiveness and harmonics.

Yep, to my ears channel switching circuits tend to sound thinner and dry. But I do love push pull boosts on my eq, and presence control sometimes comes in handy.

Re: Who else here favors single channel amps?

I hate them. There are always compromises and when you end up using multiple pedals to get the tones you wish it had stock in the first place, the sound turns to crud. Two channels - clean and dirty works for me and even better if there's a solo boost. I'm not all for crazy amounts of channels or anything, but dual channel is a must when you want clean cleans and quality crunchy overdrive.

+1 i love setting my amp for big cleans with a lil' hair around the edges, and having different dirt pedals plus an eq creates the aural illusion that i've got about 6 channels;)
