Ive got a japanese jackson ps2 which i paid about 600 AUD for here in Australia (which is cheap) and ive put a JB in the bridge and a JBJr in the neck, its hum single single, ill be putting an ssl6 in the middle, and its got a licensed floyd....and i will gig with it anyday!
Its tone is great from heavy thick rock to springy cleans and even a bit of jazz. And it plays like an absolute dream! I love that guitar!
My buddy's MIM Fender Jimmie Vaughn Strat sounded great and played great right out of the box. He gigs with every week. We did put some Duncans in it eventually, but it sounded just fine before we made it sound even better.
I've gigged with my MIJ Fender Squire Strats...all from the 80's. New pickups is all they needed but I didn't pay more than $300 for any of my MIJ Squires. A couple were under $200.
My main guitar is a SQ series 84' Squire Strat. Got it brand new in
1984 retail value $ 369. I put a set of Duncan's in it PRESTO !!
It's a pro Axe! ( I saw Dave Murray from Iron Maiden play a Squire
at MSG ) I also use some Samicks. I do own some highend/vintage
guitars , But I perfer to gig with cheaper stuff. IMHO any Guitar
with a straight neck, good setup and good PuPs is a gigger !!
I have 4 guitars. An old Fender tele, a strat, an Ibanez Artist AS200 and a cheap "Profile" brand tele copy. The Profile tele guitar was bought for AUD$120 second hand from a music shop. All thats been done is a phase switch and change of cap for a bit more treble. The neck is great and notes ring out clear as a bell all the way up the neck. Original pups . This guitar kicks arse and I find myself gigging more with this axe as it actually sounds better than the other guitars I have. Maybe I scored a freak guitar. Its a great axe. Had it for 11 years now. I use Fender Super Bullet strings on it.
I sometimes will use my SSL6 loaded LE2 Fernandes 62 strat looking axe...Plays great, looks great also..I Payed $200 for the guitar and it was in almost mint condition..I bought it in Chattanooga in some local pawn shop..Guess the owners didn't know how good the guitar was? Lucky for me..
I gig with my MIJ Fernandez Tele copy. I put in new pots, a switch, a JD at the bridge and a SM-1 mini at the neck. it sounds good for almost anything. BTW, the tuners and bridge on mine kick butt. It came stock with Kluson copies by gotoh and a steel 3 saddle bridge. I got it for $200 with a hardshell case at a local pawn shop.
I have a Gibson Gothic SG that I practice with and record with, but when it came time to gig I didn't want to take it out. So I bought a Gibson SG X off of ebay for $300 for playing shows. Its a single humbucking guitar thats very light and sounds unreal with the Demon I put in it. Problem now is that the X sounds better and plays better than the Gothic. So I dont want to take it to shows now. Now I'm lookin at getting some ESP LTD vipers (the $200 bolt on neck ones) for shows. :smack:
All of my guitars are under $500 MSRP, so if I ever gig you bet your @$$ it'll be with one of them. Three of them have after market SD Mods, but my main one (this sweet, sweet Yamaha AES Semi-Hollowbody) has no after-market mods and it sounds spectacular.
When I use my Roland Ready Strat, it's essentially a MIM Strat. The downside is, it plays like a MIM Strat, even tho it may sound different through the VG88 ... I'll stick with my custom guitars, I think.
Currently using an Epiphone G-400 SG style, LOVE IT!!!!!
In the not too distant future, I may well grab one of those Agile Valkyrie SG-types with the P-90's (just gotta have that P-90 snarl but I ain't payin $2500+ for it!).
My MIM strat cost $199 in 1995. I've put several different pickups in it (currently classic stacks), had it refretted when the original frets wore out, Sperzels and set the thing up perfectly and it has always performed well and delivered great tone and it gets better with each mod it gets.
