Who gigs with two small amps running together?

JumpMarine

18 watts of Mayhemologist
Who here plays through two low power amps for gigging, ala Neil Young's Deluxes?

I thought that it would be cool to run a pair of 15 to 25 watt combos spread about 10' to 15' apart. I would think that they would sound much bigger than a single 2x12 combo.

Re: Who gigs with two small amps running together?

Ryan, you could pm Lew, I think he does gigs with 2 Deluxes, from time to time.

Sometimes I use my Palomino and my Jr together, sounds good, but the feel is weird to me.

Re: Who gigs with two small amps running together?

I love using two smaller rigs to get a better mix of tone.

That is what it is all about. (PS - style also)

Re: Who gigs with two small amps running together?

The closest thing that I've done was running one of my heads into 2-2x12's that were spread apart at least 10' and the sound was HUGE. It felt like I was surrounded by sound. But the older I get the less I want to carry around and a pair of small combos would be much nicer to handle, if the tone is right. If I had the $$ a pair of Celtic Franklins would be killer!

Re: Who gigs with two small amps running together?

I used to use a 50W Marsall A/B'd with a 40W Super Reverb. In my case I liked the tone of the cleans much better out of the super than the clean channel on my 900. These certainly are not low power amps, but it worked real well for me. There are times I consider going back to this. It is so versatile to have 2 amps ready to go. You can set one up the way you need for a solo and the other setup for clean chord work. It is so much better than a channel switching amp in most cases. (unless you have a Bogner or something similar).

Re: Who gigs with two small amps running together?

I'm currently thinking about building a Princeton reverb to use in tandom w/t my current PR.:headbang:

Re: Who gigs with two small amps running together?

I sometimes play with 2 amps together.
When I use a lot of delay i can make it come out of one amp, then the other one, then the first one, then the second, and so forth.
it's pretty neat

For small gigs I run my GT-8 into a pair of California Blondes. Beautiful tone with lots of control.

Re: Who gigs with two small amps running together?

I have been raving on some PM's and threads about some older dude I saw when I was in NYC at the Bitter End

He had 2 Princetons and a Strat, a ton of pedals and DAAAAAAAAAAMN

Re: Who gigs with two small amps running together?

I have occasionally run my Mesa Blue Angel into a 2x12 in tandem with my Vibrolux. That's an incredibly fun time. But not really a low wattage setup.

I recently played a big festival down here and had my brand new Victoria Double Deluxe alongside my Blue Angel running into a Matamp 4x12 with G12H30s (see avatar). That was also incredibly fun, but strictly a big stage thing.

Re: Who gigs with two small amps running together?

Two combos fed from last in line stereo chorus, RR style, hm ......

Re: Who gigs with two small amps running together?

I do.

My rig is a stereo setup of sorts. I run the guitar into my wah, tremolo, compressor, and whatever overdrive/distortion pedals I need for the gig. At this point the signal is split. One side goes directly into my main amp which has been a Matchless DC30 or Bad Cat Hot Cat. This is going to change to a Matchless clone I'm finishing up. The main amp is usually run from clean to overdriven.

The second signal goes through my time based effects like delay and chorus. It then hits a volume pedal and goes to a second amp which is usually run clean with reverb to taste. The volume pedal is used to blend amp 2 with my main amp. I simply raise the volume to the point where I can get the perfect blend of both amps. Amp 2 varies but a decent solid state amp works very well. I've used the Fender Ultimate Chorus and Roland Jazz Chorus amps in this setup. A good Fendery tube amp works as well. I'm thinking of either building a fender clone or buying one of Scott F.'s amps to be my second amp.

When I want to solo I hit both amps with a tube screamer or other boost. I usually have a distortion pedal of some sort in the mix that can also hit both amps.

This is a fun setup and gets a monster sound and tone. The clean amp being blended to taste can add a lot of clarity to your sound, especially if you like playing chord arpeggios or jangle rock. One of the keys to this technique is your time based effects don't screw with the pure tone of your main amp as it only gets the overdrives and distortions.

Re: Who gigs with two small amps running together?

as close as i get right now is using 2 heads.... (5150 and a c50 for cleans)....

But i have a plan to get a quality noise free a/b box of some sort so i can switch between to combos without any ground noise.... One amp i use for hard hard these days is the SS Fender Ultimate Chorus amp and i wish to be able to add my SS Princton Chorus for solos... that way i can get a solo lead volume boost using the Princton... But i also want the A?B to be able to switch between my various tube combos too..

I saw a guy gigging in a bar once... he had those little wee Fender Blues jr's... Maybe the smaller ones... had only a volume and a tone knob on the amp.... part of the Hot Rod series... anyways he had 2 of these tilted like monitors spread apart about 4 feet behind him... Out front he was getting an amazing tone thru the pa.... he had various FX units including an old cheap multifx... It really sounded great.... only thing was because of the Ground Loop issue he was getting a hell of a lot of noise.... i tried to explain to him how to get rid of the Ground noise and he gave me some atitute..... so p!ss on him

A guitarist with attitude..........never seen one of those before, you must be lying. :biglaugh:

Re: Who gigs with two small amps running together?

I've done a million gigs with various Fender amps + an old Peavey bass amp.

I run the Fender amps' mono effect send to the input of the Peavey (TKO 80) and turn it's 3 band EQ so that BASS is dimed, and MID and TREBLE are low, so it's like a crossover

the achieved function is a croosover + subwoofer.

You've never heard anything like it!

ya it's a rare thing ha ah ah ah hhahah ha :)

he was awful offended that i dare say anything about his rig...

Re: Who gigs with two small amps running together?

i used to run a twin for clean and jcm 800 for dirty which was cool, but lugging that crap around was killing my back.

now i use one amp for small shows but my deluxe reverb and celtic dlx for bigger shows. the mix of those two amps is pretty sweet
