Who has owned both the Vox Tonelab and the SE version?

Re: Who has owned both the Vox Tonelab and the SE version?

On the same topic kind of, do you need a power amp to run one of these into a speaker cabinet? I was thinking of getting the Tonelab LA for a desktop practice unit and was wondering if I could run it straight into a nice studio monitor...?

Re: Who has owned both the Vox Tonelab and the SE version?

I have the Tonelab desk top version and tried SE when I was buying it. There wasn't any difference in tone. Same patches, etc. Both are great. I loved them much more than the PODXT. I put the Tonelab on top of my amp and attach the optional large pedal board. With the SE, it's all in one, but it's easier to see the settings and make adjustments when the unit is sitting on the amp, versus having everything on the floor. The new LE version may have different tones, amp selections, etc., but I haven't tried that one.

BluesGuy,

You can attach headphones, but IU'm not sure about speakers. I haven't tried that. Check the Vox website. There's a PDF of the manual there.

I'm asking more for my buddy who is currently using his Tonelab for a music worship team, but was looking into the SE for ease of stage work. He's read mixed reviews and I wanted to get better educated opinions here.

There is no reason that you couldn't run it direct into powered studio speakers. But it doesn't have enough onboard power to run an unpowered monitor, only headphones.

I've been extremely pleased with the ease of use and most importantly, the tones. It is not "digital" sounding like I found the POD to be, and the amp/speaker settings are dead on IMO. I'm running it through my Crate Vintage Club (2X12 50w) and it sounds great.

I run mine straight into studio monitors, but they are self-powered monitors.

How is the tone Matt, into the studio monitors? What kind of studio monitors do you use? How much were they?
