Who owns a Godin LG SP90

I do.. and I'm thinking of changing the neck pickup.
Those who have this guitar, have you ever changed the pickups? If so, what did you change it to and how did you find it? Thanks.

Yes it comes with SD stock, but when I turn my DS-1's gain up, there is a veri thin whiny sound, especially when I do bends. Only when I use the bridge then it sounds acceptable. Is this just the character of P90s or is it the pickups?
This guitar is fantastic for clean/slightly overdriven playing, btw.

Thats the character of the DS-1. The neck pup on that guitar should not sound thin and whiny. When you increase the gain on the DS-1 and add all that clipping and compression, your tone thins out. The whiny sound may be the overtones added by the pedal as well.

How do I remedy it then? It's not just my DS-1. It also happens when I turn the gain on my amp up about 50%. I tried playing with the EQs and increasing the mids. It seems to work but not enuff to satisfy my needs.

Is it a solid state amp or tube? I have played that guitar in stores in the past and saw a band recently who's lead guitarist was playing one through a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and the guitar sounded huge-real thick tone.

It's a solid state. I'll be bringing my guitar to the guitar stores to try out the amps there to see whether there is this same problem with other amps.

I've got one too, a fantastic guitar, at a fantastic price. I've never had this problem with mine, the neck pup is very fat and full. I replaced my pots with higher quality 500k pots and an orange drop cap as well. It gave me more control, a smoother taper, and a brighter top end when wide open. You might want to look into that.

Hmmmm I don't know what to tell you then. How low/high is your pup? Especially in relation to the bridge pup?

An orange drop is a Sprague brand capacitor, whether they REALLY sound different is anyones guess, however to me it seems like I get a smoother frequency roll-off.

Or did you put a capacitor on the volume pot? If you put a cap on the volume pot, how did you solder it?

I replaced the factory cap with the orange drop....022uF to be specific. I think your problem is elsewhere though, unless you have a bad solder connection, (very likely) from when you replaced the pots.

For your original question though you might want to look into a Vintage neck.

What are the onboard caps? .33u? Will changing to a .22u cap help up the brightness?

I changed to a .022uF. The smaller the number the more highs and high mids. For more attenuation in that range go for the standard .0475. That's what Gibson generally uses.
